Impressive entrance of Bogart's Duke Mantee that leaves indelible impressiontricksta_p
A very witty dialogue-driven film, not at all your 'typical gangster flick'. There are a lot of amusing interactions and the atmospheric setting has a lot going for it.corchap
Bogie is so young and scruffy here-- be still my beating heartAdGuzman
Film noir always evokes an atmosphere driven by its witty dialogues, and The Petrified Forest finds its place in it in its own right by using a contained setting to develop its story, I read it was conceived as a stage play and I totally can see they maintained that through the film.Also watching and listening to Humphrey Bogart delivering his lines is such a delight. But for me Bette Davies as Gabby Maple was a little bit off in her performance which is odd coming from Mrs Davies.
Instead of choosing a line from Duke Mantee (Humphrey Bogart) I chose one from the very first interactions between Gaby and Alan;

The movie has a peculiar set up to it and you can tell it comes originally from a stage play. The dialog sometimes feels a bit flowery and Bogart's character could do with slightly more variation in delivering the lines but still a great film.cassandraann
Bogart is phenomenal and Howard portrays an interesting character, but something about Bette Davis' performance really rubs me the wrong way. Otherwise the film is a true hit.AndrewB
