    The first sound film for G.W. Pabst (Pandora's Box, Kameradschaft) shows him in top form, telling the story of four grunts facing death on the front and betrayal at home. Think All Quiet on the Western Front, but from the end of WWI's weariness rather than the beginning's false optimism. 8/10
