Gloriously stupid, but certainly watchable. This one benefits from one less cruddy actor than before, and of course continues the awesomeness that is Treat Williams. Winner Takes All is the most childish thus far in the series, but then what do you expect when the same merc has to deal with such a specific situation a second time?
Solid little action flick, with a great (as usual) performance from Treat Williams. Unfortunately, the girl who plays his niece is... on the opposite end of the spectrum.
I'm amazed this isn't in more lists. It's not my favorite of Friedkin's films, but it's pretty high up there. Sure, the first act is a shade too long, but I was never bored and always wanted more. The bridge scene is about as iconic as this film will ever get, and sure enough it's the most tense moment in the film.
All in all, I love this movie. It's a slow burn for a good chunk, but I guess that's kind of appropriate everything considered.
Almost perfect, with the only issue for me being the narration by Glenn Close. I've seen some people criticize the scenes with Ron Silver, but I was extremely entertained by his plot. Jeremy Irons is, of course, the highlight.
Not bad. More entertaining than the first film, partly because it takes itself far less seriously. Similarly terrible ending, but at least the overall product is enjoyable to watch. Alexis Arquette is delightfully over the top, and seeing Michael Gross in the lead is always a pleasure.
Not too shabby. Pretty standard creature feature late-80s early-90s fare. I enjoyed the over-the-top nature of it, and Brad Dourif as the Exterminator is grade-A cheese. Recommended for disposable late night viewing.
I think the previous three comments have summed it up, but I'd like to pitch in by saying it's amazing that this film isn't on any list. I love Hotel Rwanda, but this is easily the more captivating film. It's very similar in story beats, but manages to place the audience more convincingly into the action and setting.
I sat through this because I was listening to Now Playing's coverage of it. Had it not been for that impetus, even as a huge Robocop fan, I don't think I would have finished it.
This is the worst thing Canada has ever done. I'm surprised we didn't go to war.
I'm not much of a Brakhage kind of guy, but this is one I would have liked to have gone on longer. I imagine seeing it in a theater would also better the experience.
Solid little sci-fi film that is difficult to separate from its predecessor (the classic theme blaring at certain points doesn't help, even though I can't complain about hearing that badass score). Overall I really liked it, simply because it gave a different, more body horror-filled and emotional take on the story. Intellectually, it's right below the original. However, I don't see there being a lot of re-watch value.
This movie is... fine. It has some fairly funny moments, the ledge gag (while stupid) is a good joke, and overall its worst qualities are that it's harmless and the message doesn't really work. Stallone does a good enough job and Estelle Getty, while one-note, isn't as grating as people seem to remember.
Overall, not a recommendation, but I enjoyed myself while watching it.
Average to good movie. Not great, but not terrible like I heard prior to watching it. The subtext is fairly obvious, and I felt like the "twist" was good, if a little underwhelming. It's a good concept, fair direction, and perfectly capable actors.
Meh. It was alright. Not sure what all the vitriol is about. All of the sketches are at least humorous, even if they are childish. Let's not forget Kentucky Fried Movie. This isn't some new thing, it's actually based around very old school filmmaking.
So, yeah, it's fine. Maybe 5/10, possibly 6 on a good day.
Come on, guys. If anyone honestly thinks the filmmakers agree with the theories presented here, they completely missed the point of the film. It's a comedy about critical film studies, and about fans looking too much into what they love. In that regard, it's a resounding success.
I'm not sure how anyone can say this is a bad horror movie. Is it untruthful? Yes. So was the Amityville Horror, which is an often boring sometimes even insulting film by comparison.
As far as I'm concerned, this is just further proof that James Wan is one of the best genre directors working today, if not THE best. With Insidious he practically redefined the haunted house genre, and here he shows he's just as adept at playing the classics.
Pretty obvious denouement, but as far as romantic comedies go it was pretty charming. Also, the chemistry between the leads was stellar enough to make up for most of the flaws.
Entertaining, beautifully shot film that may be too smart for its own good. Eventually it does start to topple under its own convoluted weight, but it just barely escapes with an understandable narrative.
Fans need to settle. This was a well-crafted horror film, filled with brilliant and practical effects. The script, while not perfect, gave us fairly well-realized characters and a strong backbone for what we all came to see--straight up savage horror. It even got a little campy, which is exactly what I want from a gorefest.
If anyone thinks this is a disgrace to the original, please, watch the original. It's a great little B horror movie, but it is not untouchable. This is a worthy followup.
Not as bad as everyone seems to be making it. The love story is strong and the two leads are entertaining to watch. It only falters by making the detective character two-dimensional and creating one unnecessary plot twist and another fairly ludicrous one.
If it was a bit more sure of itself with the thriller elements and perhaps 15 minutes shorter, it could have been a great movie. As it is, it's good. Not bad, just good.
Passable sci-fi junk. I enjoyed the concept and (most of) the characters enough to look past the pretty mundane plot. At very least, the invisible aliens create a good bit of tension in several scenes. Too bad the CGI sucks once they're revealed.
Not quite as offensive as A Serbian Film or Cannibal Holocaust, or even some of the Guinea Pig films, but certainly the most delightfully disturbing, humorous films of the year.
One hundred times better than the original, even if I missed Dieter Laser.
