ok but realtalk because some of the discourse here is super weak, what the movie does exceptionally well is this gradual exposure of the depths of male violence, beginning with the relatively innocuous and escalating with each character introduction to the utterly monsterous. it does an excellent job in its opening act of humanising this guy who's well intentioned but ultimately not able to fully grasp how gendered power dynamics affect his interactions with women, and it plays with that tension phenomenally well. and each successive time we shift point of view, it escalates this power imbalence further, first into explicit abuse and then into full on exploition. there's legitimately great and unnerving social commentary in there that really helps articulate gendered anxieties of having to navigate around men, it's just, you kinda gotta be prepped for the final 20 minutes to jump the shark in terms of plot believability.
honestly this movie was really well executed and incisive and felt absolutely fantastic until the last 20 minutes or so. Not that the direction it takes in the final act wasn't great conceptually, it's just that it completely broke my suspension of disbelief and failed to sell the realism of the setpieces and action beats. Which is a real shame because it's really sharp and well observed up to that point in both character writing and mise en scene. Like I guess I'd still recommend it maybe, because the ending doesn't totally undermine the intent of the build up, but it's incredibly inelegant and that's kind of infuriating.
Finally managed to track this down, very funny and some great interview segments. Kal Penn gets the biggest laugh of the movie (as usual). It's pretty short but worth a watch.
i mean it's not as funny as sword in the scoob but it's got some great puns and a bitchin darkwave song and some nice additions to the canon (we don't love that they nerfed daphne tho)
This movie was so offensively stupid it made me furious. Both incredibly inept in its horror as well as going to great lengths to stigmatize mental illness and trauma. It's the optics of A24 prestige horror with the high concept stupidity of movies like Unfriended. Kal Penn deserves to be in better movies.
this movie is under-rated. definite pacing problems (there's one sequence / plot change-up i would have introduced in the early second act instead of delaying it to the late second act) but there's also lots of great social commentary and some truly messed up sequences which speak more to queer experience and so seem to have been missed by mainstream coverage, which is a real shame because it's a really fun little slasher with some great performances and some iconic moments. doesn't fully land like Get Out did for black horror, but it's nonetheless worth your time. also metacritic audience reviews are full on bombed by transphobes so like, be aware the vibes are sus surrounding this movie's reception.
this movie was so mediocre, i cried. if anyone is longing for some sweet sweet modern scooby action that solidly lands with all the jokes and has excellent characterisation, watch the sword in the scoob.
this must have been overlooked on release because of zach effron's association with tween disney movies, because this is absolutely phenomenal. linklater shines through the period setting to make a movie that's poignant and charming while shifting seemlessly between biopic and intertextual allusion. it's gdang pimp jfc i gotta go see everybody wants some that's the only one i haven't seen now
Absolutely phenomenal. I'm assuming most of the narrative is constructed for the sake of the film, however it's utterly compelling regardless. I'd love to see it as the closer in a triple-bill with Shadow of the Vampire and Ed Wood - it's remarkable how overlooked this one is in comparison. It's by far the best of the three.

this movie is so cosmically tasteless and has such insane tone problems that i cackled so hard i woke up my boyfriend sleeping next to me.this will eventually become a queer camp classic but it'll probably take about 13 years and also everyone on earth will have to die at the same time.
