Top Ten Experiments In Horror
Favs/dislikes: 10:0. Cinema is commonly thought of as a medium that brings our dreams into waking consciousness. And our nightmares. It cannot be argued that film has gravitated toward capturing the horrific ever since its inception. The Horror genre purposefully experiments with our fears and fear comes in many forms, as we all know. Most film makers tend to take somewhat formulaic approaches to style and narrative; however, through different manipulations of sight and sound, some attempt to involve the viewer into the presentation, beyond just observing it. These strange and frightening dreamscapes often attempt to question our perceptions - in both a visual and intellectual sense. Unfortunately, they are rarely met with much commercial acceptance or success. Nevertheless, many of the elements employed are often highly innovative and later copied by the mainstream. Look no further than 1929's impenetrable yet fascinating Un Chien Andalou for sixteen of the most peculiar minutes ever compiled, if you have any doubts. That opening eyeball scene alone is worth the watch, I assure you. Audiences of that time had seen nothing like it, but viewers today can easily spot the film's integrity. In accordance, here I'd like to focus on some of the most unconventional, surreal, abstract, ambiguous or indulgent works to ever be made. Where nothing is as it seems. Or is it? It is within these vague perimeters that I offer ten of the most compelling experimental horror films ever made. (Not complete yet. Some entries seem to be missing from IMDB). Missing from IMDb: In Stillness I Lie (Pepper Negron, 2009) -

Amazon List to Watch
Favs/dislikes: 9:0. This is a list of titles that are available on Amazon Prime and mostly of stuff that I haven't seen yet whether they're on an official list or not. When I come across titles that I've seen, I'll add 'em as I see 'em. I'm using this as a source: https://www.cinesift.com/#/ Titles 443-533 are from this list. See the "comments" section for more info. You can help out in building this list with me by posting the "tt#######" of the imdb url in the comments section, I'll gladly add all of them to the list. You can also help with updating the list: notice a title is no longer streaming? Post in the comments section of this list, not on the title page, so others know too--back on? Post again... (This is for informational purposes only, titles will not be removed once on this list.) If you know how to do a list that automatically puts in all titles, then please do so, and let me know. Please don't click "dislike" because there's nothing to not like--there might be some titles on here that you might benefit from too. -

CONELRAD 100
Favs/dislikes: 9:0. Let's face it: That much touted American Film Institute list of a few years ago was one of the laziest exercises in modern list-making since Entertainment Weekly began publication. The average person could sneeze out a hundred films in their sleep and be reasonably assured of duplicating 75% of the AFI's stunningly mainstream cinematic enumeration. The CONELRAD 100, on the other hand, is a highly specialized and, in some cases downright obscure, round-up by and for the Atomic film connoisseur Many of these titles you may never have heard of. But that's what makes this list DIFFERENT, educational and, above all, FUN. Over the past four years, the editors of CONELRAD spent numerous hours watching and researching 300 motion pictures with Atomic and/or Red Scare/Cold War themes. From this collection we revved up the particle separator and painstakingly pared the list down to a clean 100. But unlike the AFI's collection, this list is not cast in stone. We invite spirited debate and submissions of Atomic tites we may have missed. CONELRAD will soon be presenting a fully searchable database of ALL three hundred films that we came across in determining the big 100. Eventually, we will repost a democratically elected 100, but for now we offer these films for fiery discussion purposes. So have at it! -

The Dissolve's The Best Films of 2013
Favs/dislikes: 9:0. Finding consensus among nine writers can be a struggle, but when a year is as strong as 2013, the abundance of riches makes it especially hard to figure out which great films to line up behind—and which great films are relegated to “any other year” status. For The Dissolve’s inaugural year-end best-of list, only one film appeared on all Top 15 ballots: Spike Jonze’s Her, a forward-thinking science-fiction/romance that takes place in the near future, but captured the tenor of the times like no other film this year. From there, the list opens up to a full spectrum of cinematic visions, from the IMAX spectacle of Gravity to the piercing intimacy of films like Destin Cretton’s Short Term 12, or The Past, Asghar Farhadi’s worthy follow-up to A Separation. And the 20 films below are just the beginning: Many others connected with one—or a few—of us, but couldn’t quite wrangle up the votes.
