  1. Autostraddle's 200 Best Lesbian, Queer & Bisexual Movies Of All Time (2021)'s icon

Autostraddle's 200 Best Lesbian, Queer & Bisexual Movies Of All Time (2021)

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. "The goal with this list was to create a canon of Lesbian+ film that honors all the different types of work worthy of viewing. There are films that are simply fun for a casual night in, there are deeply thought-provoking films, and there are films that are mostly just here to turn you on. This list was created through a rigorous multi-step process that involved a lot of watching, a lot of voting, and a lot of weighing factors often ignored on mainstream film lists. It was important to us that we not take into account any metric voted on by institutions composed mostly of cis straight white men. While it’s impressive when a film about queer women or nonbinary people manages to get Oscar nominations or a high Rotten Tomatoes score, the films that get those recognitions are not often made by us or specifically for us. This list does not include films about trans men (e.g. Boys Don't Cry, By Hook or By Crook), films about trans women exclusively interested in men (e.g. Tangerine, A Fantastic Woman), films based on queer books that had their explicit queerness removed (e.g. The Color Purple, Fried Green Tomatoes), or films where the queerness is just subtext (e.g. A League of Their Own, Rebecca). This list also doesn’t include short films, documentaries, or porn — with a handful of exceptions where length/genre lines were blurred." Note: This version of the list was published in early 2021. The list has since been updated again but I'll be keeping this version up for reference. The source URL on this will take you to an archived version of Autostraddle's list that matches this list.
  2. Autostraddle's 50 Best Lesbian, Queer, and Bisexual Movies of the Decade's icon

Autostraddle's 50 Best Lesbian, Queer, and Bisexual Movies of the Decade

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. Whenever I’ve said to someone I was working on a Top 50 Lesbian+ Films of the Decade list I’ve been met with the same question: Were there really that many? The answer: Yes, of course. But there’s a follow-up question worth asking: If there were that many, why does it feel like there weren’t? The fact is most of the films about us — and especially the films by us — do not get the attention they deserve. They don’t get the budgets they deserve, the awards they deserve, the acclaim they deserve. But that’s why we exist — that’s why Autostraddle exists — because while we may not be able to fund the trans lesbian action movie of your dreams, we can remind you of the rare queer films that joined the zeitgeist and we can bring your attention to all the others you may have missed. The “short” list voted on by the entire Autostraddle team was 171 films. Voting took place in two parts: Everyone gave each film they’d personally seen a rating out of ten stars and then chose their top five favorites. The overall ratings were used to put together one list and the favorites were used to form another. Then those two lists were combined for what you see here. Films that had many people rate them were also weighted slightly higher on that list. The intention of this algorithm was to prioritize films featuring underrepresented groups while still not discrediting popularity. I wanted this list to bring attention to our favorite under-discussed movies, but also for it to act as a definitive reflection of the decade in lesbian+ cinema. Well, without further ado – here is the Autostraddle Best Lesbian+ Films of the Decade.

  11. AVClub's The Best Films of 2021's icon

AVClub's The Best Films of 2021

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. 2021 would seem like the strangest year for moviegoing in all of our respective lifetimes were it not for 2020. Things didn’t exactly return to normal over the last 12 months; we’re still very much in a pandemic, and in fact are facing the very real possibility of a return to strict lockdown conditions, if those Omicron numbers are any indication. But thanks to the rollout of vaccines (and subsequent booster shots), movie theaters did scrape out some wins, welcoming audiences again with all the blockbusters delayed over the previous year. Those looking for symbolic evidence that #MoviesAreBack could find it in the triumphant return of James Bond, suiting up for a climactic adventure on the big screen, 18 months after the dramatic announcement that No Time To Die would not be coming soon to a theater near anyone. Movies never left, of course. Not really. We got plenty of fine ones last year, when theaters were mostly dormant or sparsely occupied, and plenty more over the course of 2021, regardless of fluctuating attendance numbers. As in any other year, most of the films on The A.V. Club’s best-of list were not the kind of major-studio productions mounting some measure of comeback right now; only one of the 25 films in our ranked rundown had a giant budget, and its spectacle was more song-and-dance than cape-and-cowl. You want superheroes? Look for them on the box office charts, not here. So what did our 10 ballot-filing contributors gravitate towards instead? Westerns and musicals. Anthology projects and stage adaptations. A joyous concert film and a melancholy animated documentary. If these movies had anything in common beyond their general excellence, it was the opportunity to see each of them on the big screen—a once-normal privilege that became an abnormal (and sometimes stressful) treat in 2021, and which we hope won’t become a total pleasure of the past, again, in 2022.
  12. AVClub's The Best Films of 2023's icon

AVClub's The Best Films of 2023

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. [By Sam Barsanti, Mary Kate Carr, Murtada Elfadl, Saloni Gajjar, Drew Gillis, Courtney Howard, Jen Lennon, Tim Lowery, and Cindy White] Was 2023 the year that the movie theater finally made a comeback? Maybe, but it was definitely the year that brought film to the forefront of the cultural conversation again. The Barbenheimer phenomenon is largely to thank for that; it’s been years since we’ve had such a big cinema-going event. It helped, too, that both Barbie and Oppenheimer were uncommonly good, especially for blockbusters. But there were other cinematic successes: A24 continued to dominate the indie space with films like Past Lives and Anatomy Of A Fall, animation came to play with a new entry in the Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse franchise and a surprisingly good Ninja Turtles movie and, of course, Martin Scorsese brought us another mega-sized American epic in Killers Of The Flower Moon. It was a triumphant year for film, and we’ve done our best to sort through everything that was on offer. Here are our picks for the best films of 2023.

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. A website to the detriment of good film The goal of any movie is to entertain. This might sound strange, but who cares if a movie is poorly acted and filled with ridiculous special effects? What matters is if the movie keeps you entertained. The site's whole reason for being is to celebrate the quirky films that I find so enjoyable. Well, most of them are enjoyable. Some of the movies I watch cause me quite a bit of pain, but I love them anyway. Since we always hurt the ones we love, I will assume that the movies are loving me right back. Not on IMDB: The Curse of Count Chocula (2001) MALEORVS (1990) Rock'n With Satan (2002) Tales Til the End (1996) Terror on the Wind (1999)

Film has provided us with some truly memorable sporting moments. Now, with pretty much all sport halted as the world looks to combat the spread of coronavirus, film is one of the few places we can turn to get our fix of football, cricket, rugby and the rest. To help you sift through the many sporting films out there, BBC Sport journalists have picked 50 of the best and have had a go at selling them to you. We have made our picks to ensure a broad selection of sports are covered, along with a number of different genres, including some comedies and documentaries. And we've supplied you with an indication of how each might give you your sporting fix or use a bit of artistic licence to get you invested. We've also dug out a trailer for each film, to give you a taster. These are taken from YouTube and may contain adult themes. In addition, we have enlisted the help of some of our leading correspondents to give a brief overview of their sport on film. These 50 films are by no means a definitive top list of sporting films - and they are listed in alphabetical order - but they should hopefully be enough to fill the void and give you your sporting fix.
