    Avant-Garde Film - Motion Studies

Favs/dislikes: 21:0. In this book, Scott MacDonald examines 15 of the most suggestive and useful avant-garde films. Through in-depth readings of these works, MacDonald takes viewers on a critical circumnavigation of the conventions of moviegoing as seen by filmmakers who have rebelled against the conventions. MacDonald's discussions do not merely analyze the films; they provide a useful, accessible, jargon-free critical apparatus for viewing avant-garde film, which communicates the author's pleasure in exploring "impenetrable" works with students and public audiences. The book is divided into three sections ("From Stern to Film", "Psychic Excursions" and "Premonitions of a Global Cinema") with five films in each section. ISBN: 978-0-521-38821-4

    Antonioni Open Film

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. Here is a list of films and directors discussed in the article "Great wide open: L’Avventura". "The open film is a fluid thing, pulsating, forever changing, shifting from one center to another, not quite beginning and not quite ending (or at least beginning something new in its ‘ending’)... the open film is stretched, remoulded, reconsidered, questioned, embraced. A kind of film that was first named L’avventura." "[The] map has been opened again by a new generation. Its influence can now be seen in films from every continent – to such an extent that the Antonioni open film can be said to be in its golden age. "

  24. CinemaScore F's icon

    CinemaScore F

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. "All 20 Movies That Flunked CinemaScore With F Grade, From ‘Solaris’ to ‘The Grudge’ Created in 1979, the CinemaScore polling system did not yield an F until the release of the 1999 thriller “Eye of the Beholder.” Since then, 19 more films have received that failing grade. While some have come from frequently panned filmmakers like Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer’s “Disaster Movie,” others have come from award-winning filmmakers, including Jane Campion’s “In the Cut,” Robert Altman’s “Dr. T and the Women,” and Steven Soderbergh’s remake of Andrei Tarkovsky “Solaris,” which received positive reviews from Roger Ebert and other critics. "The Grudge" has been given an emphatic thumbs down by both critics and audiences, becoming the 20th film to receive an F on CinemaScore. But not all films that flunked with audiences received poor reviews from critics. Read on to learn the history of CinemaScore's hall of infamy." 25. Films which Replicate Psychosis's icon

    Films which Replicate Psychosis

Favs/dislikes: 3:0. Psychosis is a break from reality. It can take the form of audio or visual hallucinations, or delusions (believing things that aren't true... not in a "haha the world is flat" but more of a "I am Jesus reborn" sort of thinking). Psychosis is a primary hallmark of schizophrenia, but may also be present in certain cases of bipolar disorder or depression. A true psychotic break / episode is (at least for me) a terrifying experience, where you're not sure what is real or not - as you enter into a waking dream state where there's basically any rules to reality. Like thinking the walls are spying on you whilst shadow figures are surrounding you. It can feel just like a horror movie at times - that you're living. If you're curious to experience this yourself - then most "normal" folks are capable of experiencing psychosis after prolonged sleep deprivation -Usually after 24 hours - you'll at least get some smaller hallucinations (entering psychosis may take up to 72 hours of sleep deprivation though). This list will hopefully serve as a guide to films which reproduce the experience of psychosis - to give the rest of you a glimpse into the world which some of us live in 24/7. There will be an emphasis on paranoia and hallucinations. I expect there'll be a large number of horror movies, or duplicates from my other schizophrenia list project: https://www.icheckmovies.com/lists/schizophrenia+in+film/minkin/ All suggestions are welcome and will be added, but I am the brewmeister of the list, so all films will receive final vetting from me (or my team if I eventually get a group of us going). If you would like an explanation as to why a movie is on this list, then please see the "notes" on this list on Letterboxd: https://letterboxd.com/minkin/list/films-which-replicate-psychosis/ Note: everything from Bug after in the list has not been vetted by me yet, so don't treat those as canon.
