Anthology Film Archives's Essential Cinema

A very special series of films screened on a repertory basis, the Essential Cinema Repertory collection consists of programs of shorts and hundreds of features assembled in 1970-75 by Anthology’s Film Selection Committee – James Broughton, Ken Kelman, Peter Kubelka, P. Adams Sitney, and Jonas Mekas. It was an ambitious attempt to define the art of cinema. The project was never completed but even in its unfinished state the series provides an uncompromising critical overview of cinema’s history. Rape-Revenge Films: A Critical Study

Movies discussed in Alexandra Heller-Nicholas's Rape-Revenge Films: A Critical Study, which "surveys a sample of rape-revenge films that span genre and national and historical boundaries to emphasize that, in regard to the treatment of sexual violence in the category, diverse notions coexisted contemporaneously and continue to do so today." Many of these films are not strictly rape-revenge, but are discussed to give context to the theme of sexual violence. Updated to include films discussed in the revised 2nd edition (2021), which has an increased focus on rape-revenge films directed by women—see the notes for more information on which films are new to the 2nd edition and directed by women. Parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival, La Semaine de la Critique has steadfastly remained true to its tradition of discovering new talents. Ever since it was conceived by the French Union of Film Critics in 1962, the objective of la Semaine de la Critique has been to showcase first and second feature films by directors from all over the world. Bernardo Bertolucci, Jean Eustache, Otar Iosseliani, Ken Loach, Wong Kar-wai, Jacques Audiard, Arnaud Desplechin, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Bertrand Bonello or even Jeff Nichols all started at la Semaine. A reflection of a mix of demand and curiosity, which distinguished film critic, la Semaine de la Critique intends to explore and reveal the new creation. Being a discoverer of new talents helped la Semaine bringing to light films like Respiro by Emanuele Crialese, Since Otar Left by Julie Bertuccelli, Or by Keren Yedaya, Me and You and Everyone We Know by Miranda July, Meduzot (Jellyfish) by Etgar Keret & Shira Geffen, The Orphanage by Juan Antonio Bayona or The Lunchbox by Ritesh Batra. After 1988, the selection includes short films. These shorts are not currently included in this list. Lesbian (& Other WLW) Movies
Favs/dislikes: 6:0. This is a (non-exhaustive) list of movies that feature lesbian, bisexual, or queer women. I've tried to focus on movies that have explicitly queer women but have included some titles where the subtext has been considered noteworthy. Movies focused on trans men or straight trans women will not be included. I made this list for my own reference but decided to make it public in case someone else wants to dive into lesbian cinema. Please note that this is not intended to be a list of good lesbian films. A significant percentage of the movies are bad, contain harmful stereotypes, or are otherwise a poor representation of the community. If you don't want to waste time on those films I suggest you look to one of the other lesbian-related lists on this site. Leave a comment if you feel I've missed any movies that should be added! -
