Complex's The 25 Best Graphic Novel Adaptations of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. BY KHAL, AUBREY PAGE, JOHN FLYNN, MIKE SHEFFIELD, KERENSA CADENAS, HELEN OWOLABI, MADISON HARTMAN Aug 23, 2017 If you’re a fan of today’s movies, you can throw a rock and hit like 40 different comic book-related projects. And while it’s weird that a number of these series are produced with their comic book counterparts continuing to grow on a monthly basis, there’s a history of movies that were derived from graphic novels, which at their base are more serialized comic book works. With the money Netflix is funneling into their original programming, there’s no surprised that the long-awaited Hollywood adaptation of Death Note, the wildly-popular manga series-turned-anime dealing with a magical book that grants its owner the ability to kill anyone who’s name is written in it, is premiering on the service this Friday. In a year that’s already featured (shaky) film adaptations of Valerian AND Ghost In the Shell, it’s high time we take a look at the absolute best movies that got their start as graphic novels. And who knows, maybe you might find out that your favorite film is also just as dope when you read it. Note: There are 27 films because Kick-Ass 1 & 2 Hellboy 1 & 2 are counted as single entries in the source.

Den of Geek's Top 50 movies with ingenious costume design

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. How much can you tell about a character from their clothes? Quite a lot, it turns out. Rebecca counts down 50 amazing costume designs... In the days when CGI rules and there is very little you can't do with the transformative properties of makeup, what makes the wardrobe department special? Some films have costumes which become famous purely because they're so beautiful. Some are memorable for other reasons – a perfectly ordinary white halterneck became the most famous dress in history when Marilyn stood over a subway vent, proving that it really is the way you wear it that counts. (Although it boasts the most enduring cinematic image EVER, The Seven Year Itch got squeezed out of this list, because really, the guy who turned on the fan did the most important work.) The wardrobe choices of a character can tell you who they are without a word of dialogue, an instantly recognisable outfit can make dressing for Halloween easy, and film can not only reflect the fashions of a decade, but dictate them. Here are 50 films with costume design which is positively ingenious... Read more: http://www.denofgeek.com/movies/costumes/28920/top-50-movies-with-ingenious-costume-design#ixzz4Lo38lOwx

Esquire's The 50 Best LGBTQ Movies Ever Made

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. By Tyler Coates and Dave Holmes Jun 23, 2020 The good news: this year you have time for some movies. Under normal circumstances, June busts out all over with Pride Month parties and parades. The gay neighborhood thumps with house music. Your bank, cable company and sandwich shop rush to remind you of their support for the LGBTQ+ community. And if you can bear the crowds, you leave a Pride festival with a draft-beer buzz, an application for a rainbow-flag credit card, and a paper fan with Chelsea Handler’s face on it. It’s a lot, but it’s ours. This year, the public events of LGBTQ Pride Month—much like sports, school, and life itself—are cancelled. We’re stuck inside unless we’re marching for police reform. The few bars that have reopened are for the reckless and foolish, and let's be honest: there’s only so much dancing a person can do on Zoom. The conditions are optimal for you to catch up on your queer cinema. We’ve come a ways in fifty years, from the self-loathing middle-aged men of The Boys In The Band to the peppy teens of Love, Simon. The range runs from the shoestring brilliance of The Watermelon Woman to the big-budget glitter-bomb that is Rocketman. 1982’s tentative Making Love derailed the careers of its two lead actors; 2017’s Call Me By Your Name cemented its pair as movie stars. While gay characters tended until much too recently to be one-dimensional, white, and doomed, in 2018 Barry Jenkins won a Best Picture Oscar telling the layered and hopeful story of a gay Black man in Moonlight. There’s a lot of history to explore, and there’s never been a better time to do it. Borrow a streaming service password from family– however you define it!–and dive in.

Fiction Horizon's 50 Best Korean Movies of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. By Fiction Horizon / April 19, 2021 By now, you’ve probably already heard all about the great triumph of the South Korean movie Parasite, directed by Bong Joon Ho; won an Oscar in the category of best film, best foreign film, best screenplay and best director. Real film fans have long known how strong Korean cinema is, and we suspect that interest in similar titles could rise sharply. This is why we have decided to make you this list of the best Korean movies of all time, so check them out below. When it comes to the quality of the movie, rarely can anyone compete with South Koreans today. But that has not always been the case. It was only with the appearance of directors like Chan wook-Park, Kim-ki Duk, Kim Jee-woon and Bong Joon-ho that South Korean cinema actually started to flourish. South Korean directors are signing cult titles like Oldboy, Memories of Murder, and A Tale Of Two Sisters, but there are a number of others, somewhat lesser-known, that you might also like. We have singled out a series of humorous dramas, romantic stories, unpredictable crime thrillers, but also horror movies that could provoke similar emotions as the great Parasite. Best Korean Movies of All Time For those who don’t know, the new South Korean movie wave was created in 1998, with the appearance of a couple of fantastic titles, directed by the above-mentioned artists. Their works then shattered even the wildest expectations to such an extent that the world had no choice but to simply take off its hat and accept South Korea as a new film power. After the bizarrely great success of a couple of leading projects of that new wave, people from all over the world began to take an interest in South Korean film. The vast majority of true film lovers began to be interested in what else the cinematography of this country has to offer, which of course influenced the big film houses, and the state itself, to start investing much more seriously in the development of the domestic film. This has also forced us to make a list of the best Korean movies that you must watch and that will completely draw you to Korean cinema. So check them out below. Notes: The list appears to be unranked. Entry #41 is for "The Whispering Corridors Series" of five films.
