  1. 500 visu laiku filmu filmas / 500 movies of all times's icon

500 visu laiku filmu filmas / 500 movies of all times

Favs/dislikes: 4:0. Second book of Latvian movie critics Normunds Naumanis and Dita Rietuma with list of best of the best movies. The list is longer than 500 because few of them are in parts and I included them as well.

  3. MTV 500 for 2005: The Top 500 MTV Videos of All Time's icon

MTV 500 for 2005: The Top 500 MTV Videos of All Time

Favs/dislikes: 1:0. "Back in May 1997, MTV aired a week long special on the Top 500 videos in MTV history. They did it once again in September of 1997. The countdowns were virtually identical, except from the fact that the bigger videos of that year had moved their way up into their place among the top videos of the past. The positions of the other videos, from 1996 and before, were kept the same, either to save time to get another list out quickly, or to hold tight to the original rankings and merely to add the top newer videos to their spots. I prefer to think the latter, as this is a good way to keep continuinity through time. Unfortunately, MTV has not aired another 'MTV 500' since 1997, which led me to wonder where the videos that were hits after September 1997 would rank. I decided to take on this simple task myself, simple because I merely had to look back at the Video Music Award results from 1998-2004, as well as the MTV Year-end countdowns. The Year-end countdowns were hard to find, as records of these are scarce. It was just a matter of determining which videos deserved a place in MTV history, plug them in, and we have the list below" missing #484 Fabolous ft. Nate Dogg - Can't Deny It (skip it)

  17. "Death on the Cheap - The Lost B Movies of Film Noir" by Arthur Lyons's icon

"Death on the Cheap - The Lost B Movies of Film Noir" by Arthur Lyons

Favs/dislikes: 26:0. "Robert Mitchum once commented to Arthur Lyons about his movies of the 1940s and 1950s: "Hell, we didn't know what film noir was in those days. We were just making movies. Cary Grant and all the big stars at RKO got all the lights. We lit our sets with cigarette butts." Film noir was made to order for the "B," or low-budget, part of the movie double bill. It was cheaper to produce because it made do with less lighting, smaller casts, limited sets, and compact story lines—about con men, killers, cigarette girls, crooked cops, down-and-out boxers, and calculating, scheming, very deadly women. In Death on the Cheap, Arthur Lyons entertainingly looks at the history of the B movie and how it led to the genre that would come to be called noir, a genre that decades later would be transformed in such "neo-noir" films as Pulp Fiction, Fargo, and L.A. Confidential. The book, loaded with movie stills, also features a witty and informative filmography (including video sources) of B films that have largely been ignored or neglected—“lost" to the general public but now restored to their rightful place in movie history thanks to Death on the Cheap."
