A Year of Essential Cinema - Part II
Favs/dislikes: 0:0. I've devised the 'A Year of Essential Cinema' list as direct response to 'A Story of Film: An Odyssey' back in 2012 as a way of catching up with the recognised film canon. Since 2012 my knowledge of film and the breadth of cinema I have consumed has magnified ten fold and I can't thank Mark Cousins enough for encouraging me to delve deeper. I devised a 2nd part some time ago and I kept to the same formula, tackling films chronologically and from a wide source of film movements, countries and directors. This list is a guide only and a dedicated viewer could easily watch them all within the year allocated. For me this list is become an enjoyable experience that guides rather than dictates my viewing, I love all that cinema has to offer and for those that stick to the safety of 'what they know' really are missing out, I encourage those delving into film to take risks, watch everything you can whenever you can and exploring -

A.V. Club's 50 Best Films of the 90's
Favs/dislikes: 0:0. Few talk about the ’90s as a filmmaking renaissance on par with the late ’60s and early ’70s, but for many of the film critics at The A.V. Club, it was the decade when we were coming of age as cinephiles and writers, and we remember it with considerable affection. Those ’70s warhorses like Martin Scorsese and Robert Altman posted some of the strongest work of their careers, and an exciting new generation of filmmakers—Quentin Tarantino, Joel and Ethan Coen, Wong Kar-Wai, Olivier Assayas, David Fincher, and Wes Anderson among them—were staking out territory of their own. -
A24 Films (updated)
Favs/dislikes: 0:0. Indie movie company A24 has built an almost unprecedented level of brand identity and loyalty. Savvy moviegoers actually get excited seeing their rainbow chromatic card in front of movies, despite A24 not being associated with any one filmmaker (like J.J. Abrams with Bad Robot), genre (horror and Blumhouse), or medium (animation studios like Pixar). It’s simply a soft style that threads through the best movies they put out, not quite definable, that’s catnip to open-minded filmgoers and critics alike. -
