During the celebration of the centenary of the Spanish cinema (1996), the Spanish Association of Film Historians, with the support of the Spanish National Film Archive and the Institute of Cinematography and Visual Arts, prepared a series of reviews that analysed more than 300 titles. Signed by 45 of its most prestigious members, they were published in a volume of nearly 1000 pages that, rather than listing the pick of Spanish cinema, presents a model of it on a small scale. Thus were included masterpieces, emblematic and outstanding titles but also singular or poorly known works as well as films with an eloquent irregularity, that started aesthetic and industrial trends or that were warmly received by popular audiences.
