The Bechdel Test, or Bechdel-Wallace Test, sometimes called the Mo Movie Measure or Bechdel Rule is a simple test which names the following three criteria: (1) it has to have at least two women in it, (2) who talk to each other, (3) about something besides a man. Most have solid noir traits, but, it must be said, there are some that have very questionably been cited as noirs. However, I'm not playing the noir juror here. I haven't strayed from the numbers and therefore have made no exclusions. As per the 1,000 Noir Films, the noir(ish) films listed below are based on the number of noir-related citations* they have received (based on TSPDT's research). All films in the 1,000 Noir Films received a minimum of eleven noir-related citations. The films below received between five and ten noir-related citations. *Citations were culled from a multitude of sources (from books and the internet), including many (if not all) of the most well-known film noir-related publications. Noirish: The Annex To John Grant's A Comprehensive Encyclopedia To Film Noir

"The purpose of Noirish is to act as an extension to the Encyclopedia -- an annex, if you like -- where I can add entries for movies that for one reason or another didn't make it into the printed book. In some instances, this is just because the movie concerned was released too late for inclusion. Most often, though, the reason was logistic. Although the Encyclopedia takes the broadest possible view of film noir, there were some movies that were either too obscure or too tangential to the theme to merit the use of precious page space: 800+ large-format pages -- nearly 700,000 words -- may seem a lot but, when you're trying to cover in excess of 3,000 movies, you soon learn to appreciate the constraints. That's why this enterprise has the title it has: Noirish. Many of the movies here are very borderline noir, and some aren't noir at all but have associational interest. Just because a movie's obscure doesn't mean it's lousy . . . although there'll be some lousy movies covered here. This might sound strange, but who cares if a movie is poorly acted and filled with ridiculous special effects? What matters is if the movie keeps you entertained. The site's whole reason for being is to celebrate the quirky films that I find so enjoyable. Well, most of them are enjoyable. Some of the movies I watch cause me quite a bit of pain, but I love them anyway. Since we always hurt the ones we love, I will assume that the movies are loving me right back.
