The Worlds Best Films - 2011 Edition

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. Our Top Ranked 1000 Films, all polls, was compiled by taking all film polls we could find, throwing them into a spreadsheet, and gave numeric points in descending order. The result was over 2200 films listed in all, ranked by their relative positions in all the polls combined. This combination of both critics and fans polls should give film fans the most objective list of how films are perceived by the total film community, not just a small group of fans

Some of the earlier films may not have overt content, but I feel they are significant in queer film history nonetheless. I used to manage my local GLBT bookstore before it closed, and now work at an independent video rental store. I have more complete lists posted in my Letterboxd account (http://letterboxd.com/erikswallow/).

Since its founding in 1972, it has become one of the most important events in the film world, maintaining its focus on independent and experimental filmmaking by emerging talents and established auteurs. The number of films in competition was decreased to 8 and 2 different awards were now given: one Tiger Award and one special Jury Award for 'exceptional artistic achievement'. Over the years, the Tiger Awards Competition has known several names. For example, a number of years VPRO Tiger Awards Competition. Since a few years now, it's called the Hivos Tiger Competition.

  20. "Death on the Cheap - The Lost B Movies of Film Noir" by Arthur Lyons's icon

"Death on the Cheap - The Lost B Movies of Film Noir" by Arthur Lyons

Favs/dislikes: 26:0. "Robert Mitchum once commented to Arthur Lyons about his movies of the 1940s and 1950s: "Hell, we didn't know what film noir was in those days. We were just making movies. Cary Grant and all the big stars at RKO got all the lights. We lit our sets with cigarette butts." Film noir was made to order for the "B," or low-budget, part of the movie double bill. It was cheaper to produce because it made do with less lighting, smaller casts, limited sets, and compact story lines—about con men, killers, cigarette girls, crooked cops, down-and-out boxers, and calculating, scheming, very deadly women. In Death on the Cheap, Arthur Lyons entertainingly looks at the history of the B movie and how it led to the genre that would come to be called noir, a genre that decades later would be transformed in such "neo-noir" films as Pulp Fiction, Fargo, and L.A. Confidential. The book, loaded with movie stills, also features a witty and informative filmography (including video sources) of B films that have largely been ignored or neglected—“lost" to the general public but now restored to their rightful place in movie history thanks to Death on the Cheap."
