Norma Shearer Filmography
Favs/dislikes: 12:0. Edith Norma Shearer (August 10, 1902 – June 12, 1983) was a Canadian actress. Shearer was one of the most popular actresses in North America from the mid-1920s through the 1930s. Her early films cast her as the girl-next-door but for most of the Pre-Code film era beginning with the 1930 film The Divorcee, for which she won an Oscar for Best Actress, she played sexually liberated women in sophisticated contemporary comedies. Later she appeared in historical and period films. -
Out at Criterion
Favs/dislikes: 2:0. From 1961's groundbreaking Victim to trailblazing modern romances, these are the LGBTQ films out on Criterion. In 1961, Basil Dearden’s Victim became the first mainstream English-language drama to feature a sympathetic homosexual protagonist, played by matinee idol Dirk Bogarde. In 2011, Andrew Haigh’s boy-meets-boy romance Weekend defied expectations to become a crossover art-house hit. The fact that, fifty years after Victim, Weekend is also considered groundbreaking is evidence of how far cinema may still have to go in terms of gay representation. But between these two revelatory films, there have been plenty of other important and entertaining ones made about gay, lesbian, and bisexual people, and several of them are available in the Criterion Collection, including works by trailblazers like Robert Epstein, Derek Jarman, and Gus van Sant. Tarzan film adaptations
Favs/dislikes: 3:0. An in-progress list of film adaptations based on Edgar Rice Burrough's Tarzan. I did not include tv series, though I did include TV movies and feature-length edits of TV episodes. Entries from 1918 to 1929 are silent films and film serials. Tarzan the Ape Man (1932) is the first sound adaptation of the character and the first film in a long-running franchise. It's also the first of the films to star the iconic Tarzan actor Johnny Weissmuller, who would go on to play Tarzan in twelve films total, ending with Tarzan and the Mermaids (1948). Other actors that played Tarzan in the franchise: Lex Barker (five films between 1949 and 1953); Gordon Scott (six films between 1955 and 1960); Jock Mahoney (two films between 1962 and 1963); Mike Henry (three films between 1966-1968). Ron Ely played the character in the NBC TV series, which is not included on this list, but included are the cinematically released pilot Tarzan's Jungle Rebellion (1966) and Tarzan's Deadly Silence (1970), which was edited from two of the series' episodes.
