The Beauty of the Real: What Hollywood Can Learn from Contemporary French Actresses

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. The Beauty of the Real: What Hollywood Can Learn from Contemporary French Actresses is a book by Mick LaSalle, film critic for the San Francisco Chronicle and Hearst Newspapers, that highlights an explosion of female talent in French cinema. Scores of French actresses are doing the best work of their lives in movies tailored to their star images and unique personalities. To spend time with them, to admire their flashing intelligence and fearless willingness to depict life as it is lived, gives us what we're looking for in movies but so rarely find: insights into womanhood, meditations on the dark and light aspect's of life's journey, revelations and explorations that move viewers to reflect on their own lives. The stories they bring to the screen leave us feeling renewed and excited about movies again. This list below is from Appendix Two of LaSalle's book. It includes films that are available in English subtitled editions and are mentioned in his book or his suggestions that did not make the text.

A Guide to Latin American, Caribbean, and U.S. Latino-Made Film and Video

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. For decades, Latin American independent and national film and video makers have been creating innovative and authentic works about their own realities. Yet most of this work is never seen in the United States. This unique guide helps U.S. educators and media users locate more than four hundred films and videos made by Latin American and U.S. Latino film/video makers that are available in the United States and provides descriptions of each. Films and videos in the guide vary in genre from classic feature films to independent and community-produced documentaries, short fiction, and experimental video art. Of particular interest is a more recent body of video work produced by indigenous film/video makers. 17. James A. FitzPatrick Traveltalks's icon

    James A. FitzPatrick Traveltalks

Favs/dislikes: 4:0. James A. FitzPatrick's condescending journey around the world . Although quite hokey and often terribly racist ("Those natives have no understanding of a higher power," Australia is a "White Man's Paradise"), these shorts provide priceless glimpses of a world long past (especially his Pre-WWII films). It is amazing to see the rapid modernization that has taken place within such a short span of the 20th century. Although he constantly hammers in the superiority of the USA, FitzPatrick is always reluctant to leave his destination - and often it isn't hard to see why!
