A Year of Essential Cinema

Inspired by the chronological charting of film, and the vast history of world cinema, as presented by Mark Cousin's superb 'A Story of Film: An Odyssey', I have decided to make 2012 the year where I finally get to watch those recognised classics and take a bite out of the canon. Follow me as I take on the world of cinema from the silent era to the explosion of the talkies, through the golden age of Hollywood to the uprising of new wave cinema across Europe and worldwide, the uprising of the movie brats to the dawn of independent film making right through to the current digital boom. Academy Award Acting Winners

Since the very first Oscar ceremony in 1929, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has honored the year’s most outstanding performance by an actor in a leading role and most outstanding performance by an actress in a leading role. Beginning in 1936 the Academy has honored the year’s most outstanding performance by an actor in a supporting role and most outstanding performance by an actress in a supporting role. This list includes all the movies that won at least one of its actors or actresses an Academy Award for their performance in that film. Note that in the first year of the Oscars, 1927-1928, actors and actresses were able to be nominated and win for more than one film. Emil Jannings won the Best Actor award for both "The Last Command" and "The Way of All Flesh"; the latter film is considered lost so it is not included on this list. Janet Gaynor won for her performances in three films: "7th Heaven", "Street Angel" and "Sunrise". Also, there have been two occurrences of more than one winner in the same acting category. In 1931-32, there was a technical tie in the Best Actor category resulting in wins for both Wallace Berry in "The Champ" and Fredric March in "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde". In 1968 there was a tie in the Best Actress category, with both Katharine Hepburn in "The Lion in Winter" and Barbra Streisand in "Funny Girl" named winners. -

Autostraddle's 100 (or is it 102) best lesbian movies of all time
Favs/dislikes: 9:1. Films aimed at lesbian, bisexual and queer women have never exactly been noted for their universal excellence. Hollywood is a notoriously sexist machine and it’s hard enough to get a solid film about women made, let alone a solid film about women who prefer the company of other women. While unprecedented progress is being made on television, film lags sadly behind, offering few, if any, portrayals of LGBTQ women. The term “lesbian movies” is used in the headline because that is the most popular search term for people looking for films about women who like other women, but these movies feature women of all sexual orientations besides “straight.” -

BEST cyberpunk films
Favs/dislikes: 9:0. Cyberpunk is a postmodern and science fiction genre noted for its focus on "high tech and low life." The name is a portmanteau of cybernetics and punk, and was originally coined by Bruce Bethke as the title of his short story "Cyberpunk," published in 1983. It features advanced science, such as information technology and cybernetics, coupled with a degree of breakdown or radical change in the social order. Cyberpunk works are well situated within postmodern literature. Cyberpunk plots often center on a conflict among hackers, artificial intelligences, and megacorporations, and tend to be set in a near-future Earth, rather than the far-future settings or galactic vistas found in novels such as Isaac Asimov's Foundation or Frank Herbert's Dune. The settings are usually post-industrial dystopias but tend to be marked by extraordinary cultural ferment and the use of technology in ways never anticipated by its creators ("the street finds its own uses for things"). Much of the genre's atmosphere echoes film noir, and written works in the genre often use techniques from detective fiction. -
