2. Time Out's 1000 Films to Change Your Life's icon

Time Out's 1000 Films to Change Your Life

Favs/dislikes: 159:5. "Over 1,000 films are listed in this visually arresting, full-color celebration of the silver screen. Film personalities, including actors, directors, cinematographers, and animators, write about their favorite films from a variety of angles. Martin Scorsese, Nicole Kidman, and Nick Hornby are among those who weigh in. Writers are matched to suitable (or sometimes surprising) themes and genres within the wider subject of how films can alter the course of a life. Movie stills and posters, trivia, and top-ten lists make this a book that can be dipped into or read from cover to cover. Great screen moments — endings, beginnings, kisses, death scenes — are given special spreads. The eclectic approach speaks to fans of big Hollywood blockbusters and factoid-reciting film geeks alike." Source

  6. IMDb's War Top 50's icon

    IMDb's War Top 50

Favs/dislikes: 161:2. War films acknowledge the horror and heartbreak of war, letting the actual combat fighting (against nations or humankind) on land, sea, or in the air provide the primary plot or background for the action of the film. War films are often paired with other genres, such as action, adventure, drama, romance, comedy (black), suspense, and even epics and westerns, and they often take a denunciatory approach toward warfare. They may include POW tales, stories of military operations, and training.

  8. 1001 movies you must see before you die (all editions)'s icon

1001 movies you must see before you die (all editions)

Favs/dislikes: 165:1. The famous book of Schneider "1001 movies you must see before you die" has several editions. Every few years a new edition is published with new titles (after removing some other titles). Also there are editions especially for a certain country with additional titles from that country. In this list I'll try to collect as many titles as possible that were in at least one edition of this book. So far I included, apart from the original US editions (rank 1-1250), the Dutch (rank 1251-1261), the Swedish (rank 1262-1283), the Greek (rank 1284-1325), the Norwegian (rank 1326-1332), the Finnish (rank 1333-1351), the Danish (rank 1352-1363), the Brazilian (rank 1364-1375), the Hungarian (rank 1376-1381) and the French (rank 1382-1398) editions. I found information about the Portuguese, Spanish, Slovanian, Croatian, Turkish and Polish editions, but these didn't have additional titles. I’ll search for more editions. If you’ve got information about any other, please let me know.

This might sound strange, but who cares if a movie is poorly acted and filled with ridiculous special effects? What matters is if the movie keeps you entertained. The site's whole reason for being is to celebrate the quirky films that I find so enjoyable." Source
  13. Silent Era's The Top 300 Silent Era Films's icon

Silent Era's The Top 300 Silent Era Films

Favs/dislikes: 171:2. The top 300 best silent era films are based on the votes on the silentera.com website. The list is not limited to features exclusively. True silent films (like City Lights) not made in the default silent cinema timeline (1891-1929) are also accepted. Films receiving votes must still exist somewhere and in some viewable form. We limit the list to films that were produced to be silent films exclusively (synchronized music tracks are acceptible, but part-talkies and talkies that have only survived as silents are out). 22. IMDb's Western Top 50's icon

    IMDb's Western Top 50

Favs/dislikes: 184:5. Westerns are the major defining genre of the American film industry - a eulogy to the early days of the expansive American frontier. They are one of the oldest, most enduring genres with very recognizable plots, elements, and characters (six-guns, horses, dusty towns and trails, cowboys, Indians, etc.). Over time, westerns have been re-defined, re-invented and expanded, dismissed, re-discovered, and spoofed.
