Capitolfest is Central New York's premier summer Cinephile film festival—a place to see rarely-shown and newly-discovered films of the silent and early talkie era, held at the historic 1,788-seat movie palace, the Capitol Theatre, in Rome, New York, which opened in December, 1928 as a movie house. Set in the small upstate New York city of Rome (population c.33,000) and regarded by attendees from the U.S., Canada, and Europe as the movie lover’s dream vacation, the weekend festival starts late Friday morning and ends early on Sunday evening. Screenings are arranged by session, with each session essentially comprised of a double feature plus short subjects. Each session contains intermissions and there are generous breaks between sessions (allowing for meals) as well. The philosophy of Capitolfest is that there should be time to savor the films, thus our slogan, “A vacation, not a marathon.” -

Each year chooses a “tribute star,” and several of their films are showcased throughout the weekend. Capitolfest 14’s star will be Gary Cooper! -

CINEVENT 47 Classic Film Convention 2015
Favs/dislikes: 1:0. The 2015 version of CINEVENT (47th annual) is a gathering of fans of silent and early sound films, and of collectors of motion pictures and related items. Movie screenings are available from Friday morning through Monday afternoon (with a few hours off to sleep!) each Memorial Day Weekend. Dealers fill over a hundred tables full of film, video, sound recordings, posters, stills, lobby cards, books, autographs...everything imaginable associated with film. -

I am only including titles that exist complete, or for which there is enough material to provide at least the minimal "serial experience" , such as the first film listed, [b]The Perils of Pauline[/b] which was originally 20 reels but is known to exist now only in a 9-reel reissue version. Some of these titles aren't commercially available at the moment however. -

From the respectable to the reprehensible, this is the list with something for everyone: women in prison, the undead, blaxploitation, martial arts, nature run amok, stalk & slash, vigilante revenge, espionage, counterculture, giallo, Eurozombies, Eurowesterns, SF/fantasy, creature features, video nasties and just a hint of sex. An exploitation goldmine. -
Emotion Pictures: International Melodrama
Favs/dislikes: 4:0. When many of us think about movie melodramas, the first names that come to mind are titans of Hollywood’s golden age, directors (Douglas Sirk, Nicholas Ray, Vincente Minnelli, George Cukor) and stars (Lillian Gish, Joan Crawford, Bette Davis) alike. But the melodrama is by no means a distinctly American or mid-century genre, having laid its roots during the silent era (in the work of D. W. Griffith, Erich von Stroheim, F. W. Murnau) before flowering in Japan (Kenji Mizoguchi, Mikio Naruse), Italy (Pier Paolo Pasolini, Federico Fellini), England (David Lean), and elsewhere. Indeed, the careers of many key filmmakers of modern cinema have been predicated on radical reinterpretations of the form, as in the work of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Pedro Almodóvar, Todd Haynes, Leos Carax, Lars von Trier, Wong Kar Wai, and Guy Maddin. This series pays tribute to the genre that boldly endeavored to put emotion on screen in its purest form, featuring classics from the silent era and Hollywood’s Golden Age to major mid-century films from around the world to modern dramas and subversive postmodern incarnations.
