Collider's 100 Essential Movies Any Serious Film Fan Should See

Favs/dislikes: 6:0. If you’re a budding cinephile, it can be difficult to know where to start or even to find a baseline. Cinema becomes more daunting every year as new films are released and old films are reappraised. With this in mind, the staff of Collider.com has collaborated on 100 movies we think every film fan needs to see. To be clear, this list is not an ending, but a beginning. It’s meant to serve as a starting point. Just because a movie didn’t make this list of 100, that doesn’t mean it’s “inessential.” Rather, we wanted to provide a good foundation that would spark a person’s curiosity about where to go next. Additionally, while many essential movies were done by white, male directors because historically those are the people who have had power, we didn’t want to neglect international cinema, female filmmakers, or filmmakers of color, and we have sought to include their work here. Another group of film fans could come up with their own “Essential 100” and make a strong argument for it. However, we didn’t create this list to spark an argument, but to spark curiosity. If you look at this list as a guide rather than an end-point, then it should set you on a path to building your knowledge and appreciation of cinema. Also, it should be noted that this list is organized alphabetically. We have not ranked these movies against each other because part of the purpose of this list is to get you to start with any film that piques your interest and see where it leads you. Below is an overview of our list, and you can click on each title to read our justification for why it’s essential. But if you want the complete experience, scroll through the complete version of the list at the bottom.

Slashfilm.com's The 95 Best Family Movies Ever

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. BY BRENDAN KNAPP/JULY 17, 2023 5:15 AM EST In my home, family movie night is a weekly tradition. It's a shared experience that safely introduces my children to new ideas, places, cultures, people, and emotions. It reinforces qualities like humility, persistence, and kindness. And, of course, it's fun to snuggle up on a couch to laugh, cry, and scream together. Movie night doesn't require conversation, though it might spark one after you watch a film that challenges viewers' perceptions of reality. And unlike in the theater, you can sit wherever you want, too, though a small couch will help keep young ones within a hug's reach during tense moments. Don't worry about snacks or bathroom breaks, either; both are only a quick pause and short walk away. To help you find the best films for the event, I put together a list of the 95 best family films you can watch today. They will make family movie night (or morning, or afternoon) memorable for the entire clan, from the kindergarten-aged on up. Some films feature innovative artistic techniques, kicking open doors to new universes of creative discovery. Some films sneak in a moral lesson, the medicine the cinematic spoonful of sugar helps go down. Some may inspire impromptu dance parties, especially during the end credits. And all 95 of these movies are perfect for film-loving families, including mine. {List is ordered alphabetically, and the four Toy Story films are counted as a single entry.} ...and the ones that didn't make the cut When compiling this list, I wanted to make sure everyone in the family could enjoy every film, from kindergarten-age on up. However, young viewers, even those who can read, might struggle with captions. That means that incredible foreign films like "Summer 1993" and "Wadjda" won't work for most U.S. families, although animated films that are dubbed in English will be just fine. Violence is another issue. I fell in love with "Raiders of the Lost Ark" after seeing it in the theater when I was four. That's two years after I saw my first horror movie (a miniseries, actually), "Salem's Lot." I could handle it. I know my five-year-old daughter cannot. Many parents don't want their children to see a Nazi's face melt or bald men get butchered by propeller blades — and that's okay.  "Raiders" and other violent, scary classics I loved as a kid, like "Poltergeist," "Conan the Barbarian," and "Jurassic Park," can go on other family film lists, but not this one. With my picks, you may need to offer a few comforting snuggles or answer questions about violence and intolerance, but I want to make sure that everyone feels comfortable watching these films. That said, you know your kids best; if you think they're ready for slightly more mature fare, there's no better way to introduce it than by viewing the movies together.

IndieWire's Bong Joon Ho’s Favorite Movies: 30 Films the Director Wants You to See

Favs/dislikes: 4:0. The "Parasite" filmmaker's favorite movies include works from some of the best American, Japanese, and South Korean directors who ever lived. Bong Joon Ho has long been one of South Korea’s best filmmakers thanks to acclaimed movies such as “Memories of Murder,” “Mother,” and “The Host,” but it wasn’t until 2019 that Bong become a worldwide cinema superstar to the general public. With “Parasite,” Bong vaulted himself into the topmost echelon of the world’s best directors working today. “Parasite” world premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where it made history by becoming the first South Korean film to win the prestigious Palme d’Or. The months that followed brought Bong to nearly all of awards season’s biggest festivals (Telluride, Toronto, NYFF) and ceremonies (Golden Globes, SAG Awards, DGA Awards, Critic’s Choice, etc.). Bong’s incredible journey with “Parasite” culminated in six Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director. The drama is the first South Korean film to compete for Academy Awards in the Oscars’ 92-year history. With Bong now a household name across the world, it might be of interest to watch some of the films the South Korean auteur considers to be his personal favorites. Bong is a great director, but he’s also an avid cinephile who loves talking about films and raising awareness of some of the best Asian filmmakers who came before him, including Kim Ki-young, Shohei Imamura, and Keisuke Kinoshita. Below is a list of 30 films Bong Joon Ho loves. The films are presented in alphabetical order. Zack Sharf Feb 6, 2020 11:00 am

Favs/dislikes: 4:0. Taken from the end of Nicole Brenez's 2007 book, in the section entitled "Filmographie chronologique: autres filmes", this does not include every film mentioned in the book. Maybe one day I'll get around to reading and translating the book to list all of the films mentioned in the main section. Films are listed in chronological order, primarily by their French title, according to the book, and a lot of dates are different from those on icm. A number of films are not on imdb: - Série 1 (vols d'insectes) by Lucien Bull, Fr. 1904, 4' - Les tourbillons cellulaires by Henri Bernard & C. Dauzère, Fr. 1912, 9'
10. IndieWire's Our 15 Favorite Prison Breaks at the Movies's icon

IndieWire's Our 15 Favorite Prison Breaks at the Movies

Favs/dislikes: 2:0. The Playlist Staff Oct 15, 2013 2:01 pm “You’ll like it, it’s about a prison break” says Andy Dufresne in “The Shawshank Redemption” about the book they’re shelving, Alexander Dumas’ “The Count of Monte Cristo.” “We oughta file that under ‘educational’ too, oughtn’t we?” quips Red in reply, and indeed, with the sheer number of prison escape books and movies that exist, you’d imagine that all a really dedicated inmate has to do is watch or read enough of them before they’d stumble across a plot that could be adapted for their own situation. (Note: The Playlist does not condone real-life attempts at fleeing prison unless you’re totally innocent, a prisoner of war or you have a really cool plan that involves disguises and dummies and stuff.) This week a movie in a similar vein is released and we highly doubt it will be accused of having any educational content whatsoever: “Escape Plan.” Starring brawny side of aged beef Sylvester Stallone and tanned leather pommel horse Arnold Schwarzenegger, the film puts “the world’s foremost authority on structural security” (that’s a thing?) into the “world’s most top-secret escape-proof prison” (also a thing?) and has him team up with his cellmate to devise an exit strategy while also finding out who framed him and why. While this film (previously titled “The Tomb”) may look dumber than a bucket of hair, and has been strangely un-buzzy despite its starry cast (Jim Caviezel, 50 Cent, Vincent D’Onofrio, Vinnie Jones and Amy Ryan also appear), we’re fully prepared to accept that it’s could be a lot of fun in a brainless, unreconstructed way, mainly because as often-visited as the territory may be, we have kind of a weakness for prison break films, even when they’re ever so silly. Perhaps it’s something metaphorical about anti-authoritarianism and sticking it to the man or perhaps we’ve killed a bunch of people (watch those critical comments guys!) and realize it’s just a matter of time before we’re caught and incarcerated ourselves. Whatever the truth is here’s a jolly good sampler of 15 of our arbitrarily chosen favorite movie prison breaks, and what we might be able to learn from them. Be warned, though, since we’re talking about the success or failure of the schemes, here be *SPOILERS* throughout. There are a gazillion prison break films, of course, ranging from all-out comedies (“The Parole Officer,” “Lucky Break,” “Stir Crazy” “O Brother Where Art Thou?” among others) to gritty dramas (“Papillon,” “Midnight Express,” “Brute Force,” “Runaway Train” “The Defiant Ones,” “Lonely are the Brave” to name just a few) and hitting all points in between. And no doubt you’ll have your favorites that we missed out so feel free to shout them out in the comments below especially if there’s one that you feel boasts a particularly ingenious and/or foolproof plan. You never know, right? Note: List does not appear to be ranked. CBC Arts Presents: The 50 Greatest Films Directed by Canadians

Favs/dislikes: 0:0. First published in June 2023. Near, far, wherever you are — these directors have shaped not only Canadian film but the entire art of cinema around the globe. What is the greatest film ever directed by a Canadian? It’s a trickier question than it seems, and one that perhaps stokes the flames of a long and storied divide: the one between the filmmakers who have stayed in Canada to help build up our own industry… and those who left for greener pastures (at least the money kind of green). But there's no denying how significantly Canadian filmmakers have shaped the art of cinema — no matter where they’re working. There have been many lists centered around the best “Canadian films,” as there should. Canadian films — those made within our own systems of production — are a distinct representation of our artistry that deserve to be celebrated as their own entity. But why should we narrow ourselves when we’ve also done so much for cinema everywhere? What happens when we look at every single movie ever made by a Canadian filmmaker — anytime, anywhere — and stack them up against one another? So what is the greatest film ever directed by a Canadian? That’s the question we posed to film critics, programmers, and journalists to create the ultimate list. Responses poured in from across the country, and these were the 50 films that topped their ranks. The results may surprise you, or maybe they’re exactly what you expected. But either way, they make it extraordinarily clear that when it comes to the art of cinema, nothing quite compares to the Canadians lens. How was this list tabulated? We asked participants to rank the best full-length feature films directed by Canadians from 1 to 10, with film #1 being worth 10 points, #2 worth 9 points, and so on, all the way up to #10 for 1 point. 83 participants submitted ballots by the time of our deadline, voting for a total of 230 different films. The criteria for the selections were as follows: they must be directed by a filmmaker who identifies as Canadian, fully or partially, either by birth or naturalization; they could be produced or set in any country at any time; they must have a runtime of 60 minutes or over. Any films that did not meet this criteria were disqualified. Once the ballots were submitted, we added up the point totals for each film and arranged them from highest to lowest. For films that had the same number of total points, we used two tiebreaking factors. First, we looked at which film received the most Top 3 placements; the film with the most Top 3 placements won. If the films had the same number of Top 3 placements, we then looked at the total number of people who voted for each of them; the film with the highest number of votes won. Honourable Mention: Wavelength, directed by Michael Snow Michael Snow's avant-garde 1967 film received a total number of votes that tied it for 50th place, but at a runtime of 45 minutes, the film did not meet our criteria for inclusion on this list.
