  15. Empire's The 50 Greatest American Independent Movies's icon

Empire's The 50 Greatest American Independent Movies

Favs/dislikes: 22:1. "As much as blockbusters can thrill us, beyond the well-tended flowerbeds and spacious corner offices of Hollywood there's a world bubbling with creativity, free spirits and up-and-coming talent. Some of the heroes of American indie cinema have gone on to try their hand at multiplex fodder; some have stayed resolutely outside the mainstream. This roll of honour celebrates both, as well as some of the names that didn't achieve the acclaim they deserve. But how you define 'indie'? Do big studios' independent arms count? Should Miramax's output qualify? Our criteria is aesthetic rather than financial: if it feels like an indie, it's in; if it's The Phantom Menace, it's not. Ultimately though, whether they're made for millions or 50p and bits of pocket fluff, it's about great movies that are worth celebrating again..."
  16. J. Hoberman and Jonathan Rosenbaum's Midnight Movies's icon

    J. Hoberman and Jonathan Rosenbaum's Midnight Movies

  17. History Goes to the Movies (Marnie Hughes-Warrington)'s icon

History Goes to the Movies (Marnie Hughes-Warrington)

Favs/dislikes: 4:0. "Can films be used as historical evidence? Do historical films make good or bad history? Are documentaries more useful to historians than historical drama? Written from an international perspective, this book offers a lucid introduction to the ways films are made and used, cumulating with the exploration of the fundamental question, what is history and what is it for?" Missing: Course of Irish History, The (1966) Mister Prime Minister (1966) Triumph of the West, The (1985)
  18. François Truffaut's Le Plaisir des Yeux's icon

François Truffaut's Le Plaisir des Yeux

Favs/dislikes: 17:0. "This book is a collection of essays, some insightful, some brief "fillers." Together it would be hard to rate the grouping as 5-stars, save for a sentimental attachment to Truffaut's work. The book is not just the reflections of the director upon his own work. Nor is it only French cinema. One essay is entitled "The Renaissance of American cinema," and in other essays he looks at the work of Steven Spielberg, Alfred Hitchcock, Woody Allen, Orson Wells, and Charlie Chaplin. Naturally he also looks at the famous French directors, from Jean Cocteau, Jean Renoir and the one man who was so responsible for saving the earlier French works, Henri Langlois. A major section of the book is devoted to essays that relate to the impact of literature on the cinema."
