Favs/dislikes: 32:0. Each issue of the Empire magazine since #167 features a two-page essay on a film deemed a masterpiece by the magazine. These are all the films featured in this feature in order of appearance. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is regarded as one entry in the official numbering.
9. Slant Magazine's 100 Essential Films's icon

Slant Magazine's 100 Essential Films

Favs/dislikes: 39:0. While you will find many popular classics and critical favorites on our list of 100 Essential Films, our goal was to mix things up a bit. This list should not be construed as a definitive "greatest films" package, but as an alternative compiled by a group of kinky film-lovers wanting to give serious critical thought to neglected, forgotten and misunderstood gems. We aimed for the kind of list where post-Cahiers Orson Welles could stand shoulder-to-shoulder with a pre-pastiche Brian De Palma; where it's understood that Hitchcock, Dreyer, Ford and Ozu created masterpieces besides film-school staples like Vertigo, The Passion of Joan of Arc, The Searchers, and Tokyo Story; and where the postmodern irony of Douglas Sirk's Imitation of Life is allowed space next to its modern-day equivalent: Paul Verhoeven's Showgirls (gasp!). Because space was tight, documentaries, shorts and animated films were not eligible. Additionally, we limited directors to no more than one spot on the list
10. De Volkskrant Film of the Year's icon

De Volkskrant Film of the Year

Favs/dislikes: 5:0. Since 1978 the Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant polls its readers to find out what they regard the best film released in the past year. Since 2002 the readers of the website www.cinema.nl are also included in the poll. These films are the winners of this yearly poll.
11. The top 100 Most Violent Movies Ever Made by Tim Wambolt's icon

The top 100 Most Violent Movies Ever Made by Tim Wambolt

Favs/dislikes: 59:1. Warning: These are the top 100 sickest, cruelest, most violent, gruesome, upsetting and sadistic films ever made! They contain torture, snuff, rape, animal cruelty, baby killing, genital mutilation and much more! You have been warned! Although none of these films are real like Traces of Death, they are still very realistic and may in fact contain real footage that may be traumatizing, (Seed, Snuff 102, I'm looking at you guys!) Please watch with caution! (Not complete yet. Some entries seem to be missing from IMDB).
12. Nerve and IFC's The 50 Greatest Sex Scenes in Cinema's icon

Nerve and IFC's The 50 Greatest Sex Scenes in Cinema

Favs/dislikes: 20:0. There’s a reason that any talk of sex in film comes back around to certain titles again and again. Getting two (or more) attractive actors to mash their faces together and huff and puff for the camera is relatively easy. Shooting a memorable sex scene is hard. We here at IFC News and Nerve.com sat through a lot of movie sex to make this list — oh, we suffered through it somehow. But even after all that ranking, weighing and debating, we’d be hard pressed to define exactly what it is that makes a sex scene great — in true Justice Potter Stewart fashion, we just know it when we see it, whether it shocks us, titillates us, turns us on, breaks our hearts or confounds our expectations. The oldest film on this list is from 1896; the newest is from last year. You’ll notice we decided to leave certain standards in the field off. And as always, these lists are a launching point for you to tell us what you think.
13. Tim Dirks' The History of Sex in Cinema's icon

Tim Dirks' The History of Sex in Cinema

Favs/dislikes: 71:0. The following listing of these influential, memorable and classic sex scenes and films (chronologically by year) takes into account all of the available surveys of this type of material, and attempts to provide an informed, detailed, unranked grouping of the most influential and groundbreaking films and scenes. It also considers other films with sex-related scenes, including portrayals of sex and/or nudity, and factors in a film's (or scene's) notoriety and infamy and the stars involved. Some of the most notorious (or infamous) films are quite mediocre, usually made as an excuse to display nudity or eroticism of a star performer.

Metacritic's Best Films of the 2000s

Favs/dislikes: 15:0. This is Metacritic's compilation of what are generally considered to be the best films of the previous decade. The list was ordered based on how many times each film appeared on a top critic's best of the decade list.
15. Raunchy Teen Sexploitation Comedies of the 1980s's icon

Raunchy Teen Sexploitation Comedies of the 1980s

Favs/dislikes: 14:0. This list is part of filmsite.org's History of Sex in Cinema and compiles the 1980s' "low-brow, teasy, R-rated sexy teen comedies with gratuitous nudity, mindlessly weak plots, and raunchy profanity, designed for horny adolescents, usually teenaged males with raging hormones and active fantasy lives who were looking for glimpses of naked girls and their first sexual conquest (a 'Let's Get Laid' sub-genre)."
16. Rolling Stone's 100 Maverick Movies in the Last 100 Years's icon

Rolling Stone's 100 Maverick Movies in the Last 100 Years

Favs/dislikes: 16:0. "Rolling Stone Magazine (in its 1999 end of the year Millenium issue) and film critic Peter Travers offered picks for the best (or essential) movies of the last 100 years that were made by mavericks who 'busted rules to follow their obsessions...in the defiant spirit of rock & roll.' "
17. /tv/'s Top 500 Favorite Films (2011)'s icon

Favs/dislikes: 47:1. Fantasy 100 TV Shows

Favs/dislikes: 12:1. Based on data gathered from a statistical survey and a direct poll of fantasy television experts - including critics, editors and website managers. Shows often classified under other genres but containing significant and notable fantasy content (e.g. The Avengers & The Wild, Wild West) qualify for inclusion on the list. (Updated 16 July 2011)
20. Fantasy 100 Movies's icon

Fantasy 100 Movies

Favs/dislikes: 24:0. A statistical survey that includes data from noted critics and popular polls. To qualify, a movie or series has to be generally regarded as fantasy by credible sources and/or recognized as having historical significance to the development of the genre. For statistical purposes films in a series are treated in tallies as stand-alones. Exception to this rule include film series that generally maintained consistent quality throughout. (Updated 26 August 2013)

Empire's 50 Remakes That Worked

Favs/dislikes: 21:1. Remakes get a bad rep -- but the fact is that some of your favorite films are secretly remakes, twists on existing films that turned out better than they had any right to. Here Empire has assembled their best of the best.
23. Empire's 33 Greatest Movie Trilogies's icon

Empire's 33 Greatest Movie Trilogies

Badmovies.org's Best B-Movies

Favs/dislikes: 171:14. A list of B-movies reviewed and rated 3/4 or higher by Badmovies.org, "A website to the detriment of good film." "The goal of any movie is to entertain. This might sound strange, but who cares if a movie is poorly acted and filled with ridiculous special effects? What matters is if the movie keeps you entertained. The site's whole reason for being is to celebrate the quirky films that I find so enjoyable." Source
