100 Must-See Movies
Favs/dislikes: 1:1. It is always a challenge to produce a definitive list of “must- see” movies, because value judgments are, by definition, extremely subjective. However, the 100 handpicked films in this section have delighted, moved or educated audiences of all ages, all over the world. Over the last nine decades, these films have changed our perceptions of cinema, and most have left an indelible mark on film history.- 100

15 Great Movies That Nail The Way Young People Navigate Relationships Nowadays
Favs/dislikes: 2:0. Though times have immensely changed over the course of the 15 years of the new millennia, Hollywood rom-coms are not the most adaptive of genres, and so the conventions and worldviews of films depicting relationships haven’t exactly kept up with these changes. The movies in this list are honorable exceptions, and it’s no coincidence that most of them were made by young, talented writers and directors. -

Alan Clarke Filmography
Favs/dislikes: 3:0. "It is a rare director who is at once one of the foremost stylists and pioneering realists of cinema, but Alan Clarke falls into both categories. His relentless and innovative examination of contemporary British society, paired with the integrity of his approach, makes him an exemplar for socially conscious filmmaking[...] Clarke’s ability to direct so often and his low critical profile today stem from the same reason: his films were for television, where a weekly feature slot meant numerous directing opportunities and instant ubiquity during transmission[...]" (Nicholas Rapold, Senses of Cinema) -

AWFJ’s Top 100 Films List
Favs/dislikes: 4:0. The Tenth Anniversary of AFI's 100 Greatest Movies List got us to thinking, especially when we noticed that of 400 films nominated for AFI's list, only 4.5 were directed by women. We thought it would be interesting and fun to see whether AWFJ members– a diverse group of strongly opinionated and outspoken professional women film journalists who care passionately about the movies and industry they cover– would develop a list substantially different AFI's. The result, presented in alphabetical order, is an eclectic, perhaps somewhat surprising, collection of titles. It's neither politically nor academically correct, and it's far from definitive. -

Capitolfest 13
Favs/dislikes: 1:0. Capitolfest is Central New York's premier summer Cinephile film festival—a place to see rarely-shown and newly-discovered films of the silent and early talkie era, held at the historic 1,788-seat movie palace, the Capitol Theatre, in Rome, New York, which opened in December, 1928 as a movie house. Set in the small upstate New York city of Rome (population c.33,000) and regarded by attendees from the U.S., Canada, and Europe as the movie lover’s dream vacation, the weekend festival starts late Friday morning and ends early on Sunday evening. Screenings are arranged by session, with each session essentially comprised of a double feature plus short subjects. Each session contains intermissions and there are generous breaks between sessions (allowing for meals) as well. The philosophy of Capitolfest is that there should be time to savor the films, thus our slogan, “A vacation, not a marathon.” -

Film Comment's Best Films of 2014
Favs/dislikes: 8:0. According to the source: "A note on the poll’s workings: over 100 North American colleagues ranked their favorites in two categories: 1) those that received theatrical runs and 2) those viewed this year but currently with no announced plans for U.S. theatrical distribution. For each ballot, a first-place choice was allotted 20 points, 19 for second, and so on." These are the films in the first category.
