After all, he was the mastermind behind the wildly popular "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, which raked in roughly $3 billion worldwide, won 17 Oscars and became a cultural touchstone for an entire generation. Still, his decision to transform "The Hobbit" from one book into three movies did get us wondering just how well "The Hobbit" is going to stack up as a trilogy against some of the great trilogies of the past.
