I agree with Alias. How is "Clerks" not on this list? That is the most "independent" movie ever. Kevin Smith borrowed and maxed out his credit cards to make that movie. They filmed when the mini mart was closed at like 3am. It was just a stroke of luck that the movie was distributed. I saw in an interview how he said he would be in debt forever paying back the credit cards if "Clerks" hadn't made money. It was a major gamble that paid off.

Since clicking "Source" leads to the Independent Spirit Awards, iCheckMovies better change to this (and update!) http://www.imdb.com/keyword/independent-film/?title_type=feature&min_votes=5000

alot of confusion on the meaning of indie happening here....

the truth is TONS of well known movies have been made independent from the major studios since the middle of the 20th century...When the studios lost control of the theatres in 1947 with the United States vs Paramount case, it really allowed for indies to open up....and it's only grown since....

another quick point to make is since the 1950's Major Studios have just distributed alot of indie product - but have had nothing to do with the production of the movies... those films you could probably consider borderline indie and major - but in my eyes (and imdbs) they're still indie....

perfect example is PSYCHO; made by Hitchcock's personal production team; Shamley (making it indie), but eventually distributed by PARAMOUNT and UNIVERSAL (which was a major studio by time of ownership) ...with this scenario the film is generally considered independent....

It definitely only gets more confusing for classification as the years go by lol

One of the little IMDb lists that have not (yet) been spoiled by the Bollywood Mafia ratings... Still have hopes of completing it, though I DO have doubts on which exactly is the criteria for "independent" movies, many of them (Se7en, Dances with the Wolves, etc) don't seem too far away from the big studios! (Is there anything more Hollywood than Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman?)

There are no independent movies in this list, but still it's a good list.

From what I gather, IMDb's classification of "Independent" simply means the film was not directly financed by one of the large film studios. Hence, you can see the presence of a few "big name" movies such as The Big Lebowski (which came from PolyGram when it was still owned by Philips and not Universal) and Seven (which came from New Line Cinema when it was a subsidiary of TBS even though TBS was owned by Time Warner, whose primary studio was Warner Bros). Dances with Wolves was produced by Tig Productions, which is Kevin Costner's own studio.

What are the reasons to slap independent on The Big Lebowski, Se7en, The fucking Dance of the Wolves etc.? Those were made with big studios and producers, this list makes no goddamn sense.

What happens to Paranoid park or Mirror Mask? Is this the only list for indies?
