Cult doesn't always mean sci-fi/horror. Cult used to mean films that people would see in the theater years after they were released, sometimes over and over again. In the present, a cult film could be any film that has a smaller but dedicated following either watched at home or flocked to at revival theaters. That is why Citizen Kane or All About Eve or even Days of Heaven could be considered a cult film. I do agree that A Nightmare on Elm Street would be considered a cult film and a great choice for this list but I guess the author didn't deem it worthy for inclusion for some reason. This list is far from comprehensive and if I were to come up with a similar list it would probably be 2000 Essential Cult Movies.
Is number 172 the correct film? Any chance that it should be "Fearless Vampire Killers"?
I don't know for certain myself, I haven't looked at the book.
Once I got into the 370's there was no way to read the movies as they were overlapped so crudely. I did the best I could from that point, but it just got worse. Will try again at a later date to see if that has been fixed.

There are two extra because the Three Colours Trilogy is counted in the book as one entry, instead of threeessaywhu
