Tashkent International Film Festival has a long history. It was first held in October from 21 to 31, 1968, in Tashkent City. At the film festival attended filmmakers from 22 states. Many famous filmmakers, such as Senegalese famous actress Mbissin Terez, actress Magda Kamel, Japanese actor Kimura Akira, Bulgarian director Tordon Dinov visited to the festival

After that, within 31 years, International Film Festivals were held in Tashkent with the participation of filmmakers from three continents: Asia, Africa, Latin America.

The festival went on hiatus from 1998 to 2020. There was no national or regional prize during the earlier years.
