I prefer the lists compiled by "elites" who are students of film, as opposed to list of self-selected "reviewers". This list is obviously biased toward newer films, among other things, and it appears that the self-selected "reviewers" are predominately male.
@Knaldskalle There is one more difference: the top 250 only counts votes from "regular voters," and the top 1000 counts all voters. So you could calculate them yourself, and get a list very much like the top 250, but it would still technically be a different list. Your list would put more weight behind people who create accounts just to rate a movie a 10 or a 1.
@Floor Man: The Bayesian weighting that IMDB uses is provided on the bottom of their Top 250 page.
So it should be no issue at all to apply that to the Top 1,000 and get a weighted Top 500 that's indiscernible from the official one (if you know how to do the programming, which I don't).
Why would you pay so much attention to not agree with such a good movie choice. It would be rather dumb to pretend to hate a movie, just because a lot of people liked it.
OK, i'll explain it one more time: The IMDb Top 250 is a list of all IMDb's members favorite movies COMBINED. It is NOT necessarily the same as your personal top list. The more you agree with the top 250 the more ordinary you are. So make sure you disagree! (but keep it to yourself for crying out loud!)

Because they're apparently not as good as american films? How many Bollywood films have you seen?BadSmile
I wish IMDB banned bollywood films from the list. That would be the day.Knaldskalle

Cannot wait until they add Hugo to this site. Best picture of 2011, for sure, or at least the best I saw this year in theaters.George Bailey
I think I love 95% of this list, so I won't complain :)Joschi
