Dueling messiahs. A tyrannical filmmaker. Orgies. Screaming. Dancing nuns. Chaos. Welcome to The Age of the Earth. As a piece of agit-prop it's a non-starter since the vast majority of "the people" won't even pretend to understand this movie. I say "pretend to understand" because the film is incomprehensible almost by design-- a thesis smothered with so many ideas that it is barely there in the final product. It is not meant to be understood like a "normal" movie should. Maybe if it wasn't edited by what appears to be a Christ-crazed neo-Marxist in the midst of a frenzied acid trip... but then it would be a different film. Not necessarily better. Just different. My point is you can tell Rocha thought every idea he had was something worth putting in there-- outtakes, interviews, multiple line readings, his own voice. It's just too much. Definitely something I won't forget any time soon. Don't know if I'd recommend it though. 2 years 1 month ago
