I can't remember watching a movie and being so utterly desperate for the lighting to not be so dark. It's enough to make you feel like your vision is slowly failing the more you watch and even the daylight scenes are purposely darkened. It's very difficult to care about or invest yourself into something when you're looking at a black screen. This movie thinks it's far more clever than it is and didn't pack the punch I was hoping for. The twists and turns are incredibly self-serving and not crafted with any pizazz. Villeneuve is under the impression that as long as the movie has a twist then that means it's automatically good, but that's not the case. It's called the "M. Night Shyamalan effect."

I sat down tonight, thinking about which movie I should watch. I was contemplating maybe a superhero film, but decided to go for sci-fi. I looked up "best sci-fi films of 2010s" to see if there are some I haven't seen, and from a list of some half-a-dozen films I chose to watch Arrival.

What a pick that was, my goodness. Strong and beautiful, and far more emotional than I could've expected. I can't remember the last time a science fiction film about meeting with extraterrestrials had me in tears by the end of the movie. How Arrival has a score of a mere 7.9 is beyond me, and reading some of the more cynical comments here on this page, as well as the many downvotes to comments praising the film just leave me dumbstruck. Many of those reactions are probably from people who were expecting an action movie with guns and explosions, but were let down because this was something much deeper.

Beside all the stupid American way of making a movie with "we are democratic but Chinese are not" or "you know we can easily talk to aliens", i've found the non linear story really interesting and full of meanings. Memories, languages and love for life all mixed together. Recommended

An amazingly beautiful film, intelligently written, gorgeous to watch and listen to, possibly Amy Adams' best film. Such a contrast to the usual American Sci-fi movie, typically so full of bombast and heavy handed acting and movie scoring. Maybe if the creative team that made the second version of The day the Earth Stood Still had seen this first, they wouldn't have made such a monstrosity.

People are saying such great things about this movie, but honestly, although the concept was interesting, I found it quite predictable and lacking substance.

A good thing about it is that it probably is the only movie that feels realist when it concerns being visited by aliens. We had other fiction dealing with similar concepts of enormous spacecrafts landing earth, such as the series V, Independence Day, District 9. Arrival has a much more mature approach than this other movies, which is an achievement.
The linguistic approach is genious, and it is not difficult to draw a paralel between this movie and Contact, in which the universal language are maths. But here in Arrival the so called hectopods are for some reason unable to understand algebra the way we do, which sounds unconvincing but probably adds more of a weird feeling about the aliens being extremelly different than us and have a completely distinct perception of reality. That adds a nice trick to it.

The annoying things is that this movie has this American Exceptionalism kind of ideology, other countries were soon to become belligerants towards the aliens -especially the barbarious commies China and Russia- As an american linguist single-handedly resolve the communication and end up saving the day.
I think it would be mature to have groups of scientists working together towards the goal of understanding the aliens, not military generals racing to see who will stabilish contact first, it feel unrealistic as if world governments were unable to articulate a common ground, as if it was easier to get in an agreement with the aliens than with the other world governments.
Cold war is over and the world is not like this anymore.

Arrival is a must watch, it will please the average public but it may not be so exciting for sci-fi freaks.
Typical Hollywood movie. No more no less.

Upset, between fascination and questioning, the report is merciless concerning me : Denis Villeneuve not only realized his best movie, he made a very big movie.
It is not just a science fiction film but contrary to all expectations he delivers us a melodrama of a sublime intensity. A movie which proposes a structure of the language, the spirit and the world. Better still, he translates us the strength of the feelings in front of any temporality. It's just...beautiful.
