Did no one else feel like there were quite a few jerks in the story? Hm. Not too bad though, a surprise hit of its time with brilliant cycling shots, the final feels really thrilling (and that despite it's about as suprising as any other climactic race in film history).
Being a cyclist myself I really enjoyed that aspect of the film, but this is a wonderful small town story of growing up with a love of cycling as the backdrop. Well acted all around and really nails that almost documentary style slice of life from the late 70s.
I really wanted to turn it off after 10 minutes but I kept watching to see what the hype is all about. "Best Original Screenplay"? Once you overlook the cliches, the trite dialogue, the non-existent character development, the inexplicable plot, yeah I can see how it could win an Oscar.
