Made behind the Iron Curtain, it's possible First Spaceship on Venus has value in its original form, but the Roger Corman dub/edit features loads and loads of dry exposition; I'm surprised the spaceship could even take off with all of that aboard.
The link posted (mod-edit: link removed) IS the original East German version, NOT the U.S. version. The U.S. version is listed as 79 minutes and the East German version is listed as 93 minutes. The version posted runs 90 minutes and is in German with English subtitles. According to the Wikipedia entry:
"The first American edition was only 82 minutes long. All references to Hiroshima were edited out. The American Hawling became a Russian, named Orloff. The Russian Arseniev became the American Heddingway; the Pole Soltyk became the French Durand. The original, uncut version of the film was re-released under the title The Silent Star by the DEFA Film Library at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2004."
The copy linked includes all the Hiroshima references, the characters listed and is titled The Silent Star. As there is a three minute difference, maybe there are a few scenes are missing or the original run time is just incorrect. However, it is definitely NOT the cut U.S. version, which you can watch here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Owh3MFn6R_A
OK folks, which version are we talking about? The original East German, or the USA release version?
This - The East German version- is a film I've been interested in seeing for some time, but it seems tricky to find.
NYMets link is most certainly the US version (mod-edit: link removed)
There seems some confusion as to just how long any versions are, but the consensus SEEMS to be that the DDR version shoud be about 1hr 31, the USA version 1hr 18. (all timings approx, due to the well known distortion of DVD transfers)
As the timing in the post says 1hr 31, I suggest the list compilers mean we should see the DDR version. So should we be able to claim a tick for the US version we get in the link? I have, for now, done so, but will remove it if 'the community' thinks we should only have the DDR version.. but please will someone find a link to it?
I get the impression the result is quite different - as you would expect - in political slant.
to see which of your friends have seen this movie!
