Never been into Dredd but this film sparked an interest. There is one perfect moment in this film
when Dredd emerges from the chaos caused by the miniguns to toss a henchman over the railing right in front of Ma Ma before silently returning to the smoke cloud. That is some badass shit right there.
To date, the best Judge Dredd movie is probably still Robocop, but the recent Dredd comes damn close. It just doesn't have the crazy satire of the 2000 A.D. strips for me to make that call. However, Mega-City One is a believable environment, Karl Urban is unrecognizable behind the Judge Dredd persona (he's got the pout down cold, and never EVER takes off his helmet), and the use of the Slo-Mo drug further creates comic book panels as frozen moments in time that tie back to the famous strip. It's a very straightforward action plot, surprisingly claustrophobic for an action-sf effects picture, but that's somehow refreshing in this era of complicated thrillers and kitchen sink special effects movies. But it's smartly done. With a closed-off protagonist, they've made a rookie psi-Judge Anderson the audience identifier, and while the violence is very much Rated R, the Slo-Mo sequences that feature it give it a kind of morbid beauty that takes the edge off the gore. No plans (yet) for Dr. McCoy and the other girl from Juno to ride their bikes through Mega City One again, but I'd love to see some sequels, maybe a visit to the Cursed Earth or even Judge Death.
While the film manages to hold tone and pace throughout, it amounts to little more than eye candy special effects, blood splatters and an endless chase scene. Little to no story is presented, and motivation is essentially not even considered. In short, people who like this sort of thing, might like this sort of thing.
I wait for a sequel to this version of Dredd. The slowmo elements; the beautiful yet at times grimey & dark visuals; the Stoic Dredd; the depiction of a crumbling, choking society; the sound work, too; everything blends together perfectly to make an action sci-fi that's almost as great to me as The Matrix. This movie has a cult following, but it gained less than half the recognition it deserves, IMO.
Heard this movie didn't do to well and I freakin' don't know why! Such an action-packed thrill-ride from the start to the finish. And dude, that director of photography was on point, so many awesomely shot scenes that make it feel like you're walking into a piece of art. Karl Urban did absolutely great and I sooooo want a sequel.
Stylish and solid, a true popcorn action movie that doesn't disappoint. The action is great stuff and the worldbuilding is also on point. Urban dons the helmet and captures the character quite well, plus the costumes are totally badass, you just love hearing that leather rippling when the characters move. The slow-motion photography is quite spectacular and is really a metaphor that goes hand in hand with the film's themes. In Dredd's world, violence is commonplace and has reached a level of saturation where it becomes as natural as breathing. It has evolved into art, something almost beautiful.
Not as bad as I expected; the world-building, though limited in scope, is complete for what it did. Karl Urban emotes about as much as a turnip, but that serves the character well. Lots of CGI gore, but that's what the audience expects, right?
Wow, that was a lot better than I expected. Very entertaining despite the maybe-not-so-great plot, freaking amazing visually. Really enjoyed the soundtrack, too! I wasn't familiar with any of the comic books or other films, I mainly decided to see this film because I love Lena Headey, and she was pretty awesome as I anticipated. I usually like Karl Urban a lot too but he didn't really do much acting in this one. The muscles in my faces kinda hurt after watching that pout for one and a half hours...
Not quite what it could have been. It wasn't really 'Dredd', albeit in a different way than the Stallone movie, which wasn't really 'Dredd' either. Blend those two together and infuse into The Raid: Redemption... hmm. Oh well. It is what it is.

the corrupt Judges were unnecessary. The voice overs too. Andersons psi-powers are either insanely powerful or borderline useless?
How about another script-check and rewrite some of those inconsistencies, and reconsider a bunch of tired cliches. Maybe give Karl Urban better catering so he doesn't have that look of level 99 constipation all the time.
Barely recommended, Dredd fans will have many issues with it. Still, it's better than the last one by a long way.

It did have a striking similarity to The Raid, but Dredd is a more complete, hyper stylish product.Pleasantly surprised.
