Ray Bradbury's fable about book-burning is slow and dry in spots, but definitely shocks, touches and interests. Its final question is quite beautiful if you are a lover of books.
Before watching this movie, I was told it was a lame adaptation, so that was what I expected. Nevertheless, I have to say I was pleasantly surprised.
Was the acting lacking? Yes. Did it have some undeniable issues? Clearly. BUT Julie Christie performance both as Clarisse and as Linda was amazing, Beatty's scenes shared the same feeling as it did in the book, and the movie provided some interesting elements Bradbury had not thought of.
It has a clear reference to Hitchcock, and maybe that seemed forced in a Truffaut production, but the music was amazing.
So, long story short, the movie is somehow flawed, but it was not the bad movie everyone led me to believe.
A brilliant intro sequence is followed by some outlandishly ridiculous-looking firemen. They fail miserably at embodying a scary and mind-numbing society devoid of text, keeping its people docile with sports, tv, drugs, and brute force.
Unfortunately there is very little suspension of disbelief, the story is erratic and rhapsodic, behaviour irrational and unbelievable.
Fascinating at times, but mostly clumsy and ridiculous – not in the book.
I haven't read the book but this is a great futuristic concept for it's time. Although the scenario is unrealistic, the acting & direction make it believable & thought provoking.
I really liked this film, it's a very visual and deeply layered adaptation of the novel, and focuses on the societies loss of feeling and thought because they had no books to ignite any passion; and keeping everyone drugged so they can't do anything about it. Well written, directed and acted, I liked Truffaut's use of camera angles, color's and the very unique view of the future. Julie Christie is wonderful, the score is great, I really don't know why this film isn't more popular, maybe it's too deep or weird even for sci-fi nerds.

Excellent. Dated in it's acting style, but the landscapes, design, architecture, and framing make it a dream to watch.Siskoid

The main idea of a controlled society is poor developed, making the movie very superficial and with several plot holes.. interesting though.seithscott
