when people think about rambo, they think off the sequels ; endless killing sprees.
but the first part is a very quiet, very intelligent film.
i watched it expecting to get an action movie who would entertain me enough not to get boring, but this film really kept me thinking for days after

Most people seem to think Sylvester Stallone can't act or is a bad actor -- but watch his monologue at the end of the movie.

my favorite movie of all time period... Sometimes I think the tone of the movie is forgotten by all except fans... mainly due to the increasingly violent sequels

This actually has a strong message about reinsertion of the military back into civilian life
quote:
Back there I could fly a gunship, I could drive a tank, I was in charge of million dollar equipment, back here I can't even hold a job *parking cars*!

Solid combination of action and drama... A F****** classic. 7.5/10

Can't believe this film is only in one list. In my opinion the most intense, dramatic and simply best action flick ever. Stallones acting in the end is indeed really good, next to the first Rocky his best performance. The Action List is totally incomplete without this genre-masterpiece.

Like Rocky before it, the first Rambo movie, First Blood, is grounded in the American malaise of the late 70s (and apparently early 80s), and then the franchise goes off the rails into 'roided flag-waving (pretty quickly in this case). But before it gets too crazy, we have a clear message about the USA's treatment of its unwanted and uncelebrated Vietnam vets. That, and making the film still relevant, points against police overreach and the notion that militarized policing is an incompetent danger, in every way inept and irresponsible compared to a properly trained soldier. First Blood does go a little overboard in the third act when Rambo goes on the offensive - he's better as jungle warrior justified by his severe PTSD, surviving in beautiful Northwestern locations, going through hell, in fact rather literally in the case of that mine sequence. Still, the points are made and remain important. We are a culture that creates killing machines, puts them in situations where they will suffer mental damage (if they survive at all), then discard and oppress them. First Blood cooks that recipe for disaster to its extreme.

One of the best movies of all time. 2 and 3 were like strange, violent comedies (especially 3) - great to watch with popcorn and friends; but 1 and 4 are amazing. I watch them over and over again.

Not knowing anything about Rambo going into it (other than to expect lots of action) I was very pleasantly surprised in how deep and poignant the message was. The entire societal message of veterans adjusting back into civilian life is somewhat common nowadays but in 1982 I have to wonder if it was much more taboo and hardly explored at all. Far, far from your traditional action picture, quite sophisticated.
