I'm a little shocked that Ron Howard made such a great movie. The performances were outstanding, and for once, Howard was smart enough to be unobtrusive with the camera and just let it capture the boxing match that was Frost/Nixon.
I didn't like it. Too little character development, the characters weren't likable, I wasn't sure what the role of the girl was (she's just there because it needs a romance?), the writing is sloppy (both Nixon and one of the "journalists" use the phrase 'banal anecdotes' in two different occasions, which to me is a sign the writer couldn't think up better language), the humor is non-existent (a joke about cheeseburgers and effeminate Italian shoes). This movie is a dud compared to other Nixon films like All the President's Men.
Entrancing. I wouldn't have believed it from a talking head movie about, you know, trying to get an interview with someone, and then sitting down for that interview, especially from Ron "no style" Howard. But it totally works as an intellectual boxing movie. The performances are top notch, nuanced, funny, and moving. Frank Langella in particular... I felt immense sympathy for his Nixon, and by ricochet for the real Nixon when I saw parts of the real interviews on the extras.
