Mildly entertaining, at its heart It's a long infomercial for the corp with Eastwood beating the crap out of anyone who gets in his way (no matter how imposing they are). Definitely one of the movies where Eastwood's acting doesn't quite jive with his behind the camera directing skills. Every other phrase out of his mouth is usually an insulting one-liner directed at another character. After a while it wears on you.

Honestly, what is there to say? It's a US Marines commercial disguised as a underdog movie without any sort of proper build-up, proper characterization, character development or even a good payoff. You can't root for characters that you don't care about or are so one dimensional that they all end up as caricatures. There are some glimpses of possible depth here and there, but it's all in vain when we come to the climax which, in my opinion, is essentially quite an anticlimax since there are barely any opposition, it's barely a challenge and we're dealing with the same characters that we started out with.

"The battle of Heartbreak Ridge was actually fought mostly by the U.S. Army's 2nd Infantry Division. The battle became infamous, after the Division Commander ordered the 23rd Infantry Regiment and an attached French infantry battalion, to stage a disastrous frontal assault straight up Heartbreak Ridge. Sergeant Major Choozoo mentions that he and Gunny Highway later joined the Marines after leaving the Army's 23rd Infantry Regiment." IMDB

Very entertaining, funny but predictable with a great Eastwood.
