I'd do it injustice by calling it torture porn, though it does share in that genre, it's a bit better than others in the category (not that I watch that stuff). There is a story here, and you don't get to that kind of horror until the third act, just before it actually turns into more of a thriller. The plot focuses on douchebags backpacking through Europe who get lured to a hostel that is a front for rich men who pay to torture and kill people. The theme is human exploitation, using the exploitation movie as a framework. I don't think it succeeds on every level though. The violence, gore, drug use and sex of the genre make the worthy thematic underpinnings of the film especially hard to see on the first viewing. And the twists, while good, do undercut whatever subplots were running. By the time you care for a character, you're into the portion of the film that's making you wince.
Possibly the most checked film, that's not on any of lists.
You noticed what's unfair? That American guy killed six people - for free! Looks like the main idea is "you, non-Americans, must pay for the pleasure, and we, Americans, just come and get it".
And why the hell an American costs as much as 5 Russians? Kinda fascism of the consumer society, yeah? Cheaper race - more expencive race?
I do agree that this movie is very flawed, though discussing it as torture crap I don’t agree with. The first half show how the backpackers are living a lifestyle of exploitation, sex, drugs etc, and how they objectify women. Second half they themselves are being exploited by the elitist club. This as Well as How it critisizes the audience who love violence and exploitation on that meta level

I borrowed the DVD from a friend and, just for the record, did return it.BeasleyOnFilm
Slow, unimaginative and uncomfortably focused on sex and violence. Utter crap.eg
This movie sucks.@Dziga Murnau
You cannot compare the killings done in this movie by the characters. Their motives are very different.

I thought this was awful. Cabin Fever was much more entertaining.Veterok
For some reason I felt this film was a complete waste of my time. Hours of useless copulating etc before the "plot" even started. Aaargh.Skyscore
