The musical numbers and pieces are breathtaking. It was nice to have my father in the next room enjoy the living room's noises for once. The storyline was a little dark for my tastes, but it was excellent in what it aimed to be -- an intense, roiling romance struck with pride and passion. For me, my enjoyment of the movie fell more with the score and the oddly happy/depressed secondary character Sid Jeffers (Oscar Levant). His humor was irresistible! But the behind-the-scenes was pretty fascinating, as well, with Isaac Stern handling (and playing!) the violin for John Garfield.

1946 was a year full of emotion. It made you feel good (It's a Wonderful Life) and it made you feel depressed (this). Fantastic movie!Camille Deadpan
