At the end of the film my heart was beating fast, my eyes wanted to stop looking, my teeth were pressed against each other, and I felt like crying.

Some scenes were unbearably painful to watch, but just as life is unbearably painful to watch sometimes.

It gets to you.

This was the first American film to follow the Dogme manifesto, and for the most part is a compelling, original and blackly funny vision, capturing through crude but often beautiful cinematography and scattershot editing the perspective of a schizophrenic - and Ewen Bremner is phenomenal in the title role; it's mind boggling how believable he is as Julien. Werner Herzog is also terrific value as the sadistic father, equal parts hilarious and frightening. For all that some sequences outside the family home tend to stretch on and sometimes there's a strong sense that amidst the fine improvisation of the cast there's no structure or guidance coming from Korine. Ultimately it's worth it for the brilliant performances and the chance to see something unique, bizarre and untouched by the monotony of the mainstream.
