After seeing 13 Assassins I can easily say that Takashi Miike only continues to impress me more and more as a director. This is without quenstion one of the best samurai-films in recent years, mabye the best since Seven Samurai. However, it's not as plot and charcter driven as Kurosawa's film, but thats not really the point. Unlike Seven Samurai 13 Assassins' is more of a none stop gory action packed rollercosterride and it's awesome!

If you're fan of the genre seeing this movie is mandatory.

An authentic samurai epic from director Takashi Miike. Owing something to both history and Seven Samurai, the film has an elder samurai assemble a team to kill the Shogun's decadent and psychotic brother whose actions threaten to end an era of peace. Some of the 13 are fairly generic (students of others, for example), but enough of them are distinctive to make their victories and defeats resonate, as the second half of the film takes us through a massive battle in real time. The violence is harsh and realistic, and Miike doesn't rely on music or editing to make his points. It's Spartan and thus much more subtle film-making. To my taste are the lasting ambiguities of the film, from the impervious mountain man's almost spirit-like appearance to the final smile to what happens after the credits fall. The more I think about 13 Assassins, the more I like it.

I would prefer this as an action movie over any stupid 21th century hollywood action films. Very realistic, no bullshit awesome fight scenes. No boring stereotype characters. Even the villains have something interesting to say. People who can't just understand the characters is probably because they are very unfamiliar with the peace era feudal-japan people, they were not westerners so stop judging the characters like they would act like one. Jeez, try to judge characters in their own conditions.

Brilliant. Also really enjoyed the inclusion of the... well, you'll know what I'm talking about if you've seen it yourself. Caught me off guard and actually worked well with the serious nature of the movie.

For those who are asking (not really a spoiler, though you guys already spoiled it), the woodsman/peasant who joined them was a demigod.

I'm sure this was already said, but adding "aka: 13 Assassins" would make this movie so much easier to search for.

Fairly well done samurai epic, the only sticking point for me was the mountain-man character, who seemed like a thinly veiled Kikuchiyo (Toshiro Mifune's character from "Seven Samurai"). He became too much like comic relief, and shows up only in the last half of the film, when up to that point everything had been so deadly serious... it's some major mood-whiplash when he shows up. And judging from one deleted scene on the DVD, his ridiculousness was only barely touched upon in the final film...
