I never imagined in my wildest dreams that this would be on any lists. I completely agree with Kaspar here on the misrepresentation of Indian Cinema by the reviewer. There are far better (and worse) films that represent the Mumbai based industry better than this.
Khuda Gawah never had any significance in the Indian film industry. It was supposed to be a female lead centric film which was later, for business' sake, made an Amitabh Bachchan film. As the screen time was too short for his status and Bachchan was already on his way downhill, this turned out to be nothing but an over-budget disaster.
The reviewer, obviously, picked up the first Hindi film that he saw on his shelf. 12 years 1 month ago -

"This entry discredits the entire list and shows how big a fool is the reviewer."
I'm afraid you're absolutely right. His argument for including it, is that this is more representative of Indian cinema as a whole than Satyajit Ray. First of all I think if you want to be fair to Bollywood, this is one of the worst films to pick; and if you want to be "fair" to Indian cinema than you should include Ray, Ghatak, Mira Nair, a couple of outsiders view and then a few Bollywood films that actually showcase the possibilities of that cinema (maybe Pyaasa, Sholay and Lagaan).
Thomson is just showcasing his ignorance and his own condescending views of that cinema with this choice. 12 years 8 months ago -
