This is a romantic movie about vampires, with children as lead actors. In a way, a Twilight movie that you don't have to feel ashamed for watching

Swedish vampire film Let the Right One In, a lyrical, snowbound picture that's really about feeling like an outsider. The twist, if you will, is that the leads are 12 years old. She's an immortal vampire, trapped at that age, and he's the friendless kid who gets bullied at school. Friendless, that is, until she moves in next door with her "father". Will young Eli be her next caretaker when he dares fall for her? More a platonic romance than a horror picture, it nevertheless has its splashes of gore and its unsettling moments. Because while it may seem a charming tale at times, it's still ultimately about the creation of a monster, a monster created by isolation and oppression. But geez, talk about bad influences! I keep telling people I hate vampires, but I keep seeing really, really good vampire pictures lately.

I'd consider this to be a drama film with horror movie elements rather than a full blown horror movie, but it's definitely worth watching. Its originality sets it apart from many horror movies from recent years.

I don't care for vampire movies so I'm no judge. But I thought this movie was awkward, slightly confusing, and slow. The cinematography was pretty good, though.

Brilliant movie, a fresh breeze of quality in the vampire genre.

The camera work is very good, some exceptional shots (the bridge, the pool, the combustion among others) and that for a relatively small film! very elegant! Hoyte van Hoytema skill is close to match Lubezki's!

I don't speak Swedish, but the acting seems very good. The interactions between the kids is natural (which is quite rare in horror movies). And the face of the girl, she is so well casted, sometimes she looks as a young girl, sometimes as an old lady.

It is a film, basically about connection. And the characters all connect in weird ways: the misunderstandings between Oskar and his mum, the morse language betweem Oskar and Eli, the hard life in the streets and schools of Sweden's 80s. The reason why Oskar and Eli initially get together is not that they are kind to each other or have an instant click or something. They hang out together, basically because they don't reject each other. That feels very sad to me.

A really nice thing is how they use the concept of vampires. Instead of being a fancy goth society sipping blood from crystal glasses in castles, it treats being a vampire like a curse. Eli is an 11 year old, but has been an 11 year for really long. (s)he can't change, grow, become a proper adult. She sucks blood from dirty old people to survive. But she kills them out of kindness, so that they don't have to share her fate. There's no glamour in her.

And I don't understand people mentioning the innocence of the characters. We have a vampire girl convincing people to kill for her, to make them share her suffering of having to murder to survive. A boy who fantasizes about stabbing his bullies. I mean, they are no devils, just messed up kids, and like all kids they live in a world to big, complex and threatening for them, but they are clearly no angels!

Alfredson showed he is a brave filmmaker, making good choices, having a very elegant though slightly disturbing style. Looking forward to see more from him.

An interesting and creative take of the "vampire" genre without exactly being part of that genre, making it original, extremely thematic and of course haunting, so very haunting.

It's definitely a hard story to digest, especially if you read the book. But it's amazing. Really liked it!

I think it's great cuz it takes a lot at being uncanny, it's intense, hard to diggest and, though the end makes us thing about the happy ending of a sinister fairy tale, there's something that makes me very uncomfortable. I think that was the director's intention.
