Very nice adaption of the first part of Dantes' Divina Comedia, Inferno. Especially considering the time it was made. Nice special effects and surprisingly a lot of nudity. On the other hand why do you need clothes in hell. It is warm enough.
I agree with many of the other posters here where they say the film is dull but there are elements that are interesting on their own. Many of the special effects are really cool and the concept and theme of the film is fascinating. I wish it was pulled off a little better. Most of the inter titles just describe the action that follows rather than complements the visuals like in most other silent films that I have seen. Also, there are many scenes where the actors are just standing around talking to each other even though there is no way of knowing what they are saying. That part is more than a little bit stupid. Still, it is worth seeing for the historical value of the feature. Anyone with interest in film history is going to find something worthy of interest.
Don't you people even get some joy in watching naked people running around with demons and that sort of things?
In my opinion, the best film so far from the 1890's until its date, even including Méliès in between; on the other hand, it could have become exceeded easily and quickly by more Hollywood-esque—and vulgar—stuff, like Griffith.
Having read the comments before watching the film, I thought this would be really bad; it wasn't. However I agree on that the music is awful, and what a director selects to be heard in their film is, for me, as important as staging and dialogues. If listening to a piece of Baroque is by itself already insufferable, specially when played almost with just one cello, doing it continuously for a whole hour is like an actual trip to hell, which I think it wasn't the directors' intention. Since the film is not as vulgar as the music given to it in this adaptation, may the film work a bit better with a more awe-inspiring music? Just sayin'.
It is a good attempt at the end of the day, but a work like Divina Commedia deserves the most dramatic sort of production, just like the Lord of the Ring's trilogy.
You guys really don't know what excruciatingly boring is. This movie is rather entertaining if you have seen most other silent films--Particularly Queen Elizabeth (1912). That is an unendurably boring film! lol
Fascinating, but excruciatingly boring. Funny how the special effects still look convincing after more than 100 years while the symphonic soundtrack by Tangerine Dream already sounded dated the day it was recorded.
This film didn't age well at all. The special effects were somewhat good, but there's not much else to say about it. If you're brave enough to endure this film here's some advice: mute the audio and put on any kind of music of your choice.
This is the kind of crap Europeans peddle into top lists. Good thing we Americans are here to rate them into the oblivion they belong to --- RATED 2/10 on IMDb

Edison audio track is ESSENTIALVisually it perfectly captures the famous Dore illustrations. Cannot think of another film of this period that looked like a film.

I agree...excruciatingly boring. The soundtrack really added very little except to make it sound like it belonged in a symphony hall.St. Gloede
Rather painful to watch - and that's not due to the torture. Amateurish and dumb.mysteryfan
