The more I think about Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, the more I like it, but in the watching of it, I did feel a little listless at times (as with The Hateful Eight). It doesn't need to be that long, and a lot of points it makes are way too on the nose. If anyone wants to call this QT's "most personal film", I think they would be right. Fictional actor Rick Dalton is on the other side of his career peak, and so is the cowboy in the novel he's reading, so we might see this as Tarantino's own midlife crisis movie. There are references to many of his past films (Rick stars in an Inglorious Basterds-type film, Bruce Lee is a character, Kurt Russell is a stuntman, and the film's relationship with the Manson Family Murders is akin to Basterds' with World War II. The foot fetish has never been more blatant, with way too many feet pressed up against the lens. And of course, it's about making films in the era that begat a lot of what QT would later use as inspiration, and a chance to indulge in the gadget side of things, reproducing looks from old films in the Dalton vignettes. On the other hand, the language is more naturalistic and less "written" than any of his past efforts (that may or may not be a positive, depending). We spend two-thirds of the film getting to know the amusingly pathetic Dalton, his stunt double Cliff Booth, and real-life murder victim Sharon Tate (a loving portrayal compared to the comedy wrung out of the other two), then we finally get to brass tacks and things get tense and violent. So while there's a lot of humor and knowing the characters as well as we do helps the pay-off, it's still a film that indulges in long detours from the plot. A lot of the best scenes are in those detours, but sitting in the theater, I did long for a tighter focus.leodelgado01
Well, I can now say there's never too much of Brad Pitt driving around listening to the radio.Jumping Elephant
Tarantino's feet-iest movie yetgbpxl
QT set out to do something different. It didnt feel like a rehash of his older films. The film is set in a very different world from today's. I was upset when it ended because I wanted to keep living in the world that QT created with this film. Funny, moving, heartfelt, and in usual QT fashion, violent. 5/5Cynicus Rex
It has funny bits and I freaking loved watching Brad Pitt; his performance was—not a performance; he seemed like himself, or how any man dreams to be. The long-winded buildup made the finale disturbingly exciting and gratifying. However, if it wasn't for the ending the movie would've been a major disappointment. In any case, it's definitely not top 250 worthy. I mean, consider what that list means: the top 250 out of all the movies that exist. When you're honest you must realize this one does not belong.

A masterstroke, heavily influenced by Linklater, who QT humbly(!) acknowledges as the greatest director of his generation. The film acts as a love letter to his youth, to his ego, to his cinematic heroes, to his fetishes, to his themes, etc. An auteur given free reign to make something so ridiculous and masterful at the same time that it baffles explanation. I'm flabbergasted.danisanna
Wow this was boring.Earring72
Great looking, well acted love letter to the late 60ies Hollywood and tv world. Really enjoyed it. Final 30 minutes are full blown TT.Not for everyone though. If you don't know the era or the references or know the back story of Sharon Tate, it will be a long 2,5 hours.

I loved many elements of this film but overall it was messy, unfocused, spiritually empty, and the ending was mindlessly stupid and grossfrankqb
It's hard to talk much about this film without spoiling it. Much of the film's enjoyment comes from piecing together what Tarantino is trying to say as the film moves along. Of course, the film itself is quite enjoyable buoyed by Di Caprio and Pitt's performances.Nonetheless, the film is fascinating, mostly in hindsight, but interesting along the way too. I'll put my more spoiler-y thoughts below, but needless to say I quite enjoyed this film and thought it was his best since Kill Bill.

If you are a fan of 60's culture or even classic movies from Hollywood's golden age then you will be richly rewarded by the plethora of Easter eggs and flavor of the film. Well acted by DiCaprio and Pitt who make a great cinematic duo. The classic Tarantino penchant for making you off balance by way of not knowing where the plot is headed is used to full effect and works very well. I always feel I'm in good hands with Tarantino and no matter where the movie is going I know it's leading somewhere good. You can tell Quentin was having a ball with filming a movie within a movie which allowed him to go full tilt with his own brand of artistic direction and screwing around with the viewer's own suspension of belief i.e. we get to see Leo brilliantly playing a struggling actor and then transform into something almost alien at the drop of a hat when his character himself gets to act. It's a surreal experience and so powerful.
I really love how effortlessly 60's it feels. Capturing that vibe is something a lot of films struggle with and tend to overcompensate with just going all out with references, period costuming, and vintage cars but Quentin has done his homework and great care was taken. I had a ball watching it and despite the runtime I think I almost wanted even more.

If you watched this and didn't know it was by Tarantino you'd say it was a bad movie. But Tarantino directs and critics are falling over themselves to say it's amazing.

6 + / 10A little disappointed in general, surprising and really fast-paced climax! NOT one of Tarantino's best.

Tarantino keeps on doing movies just as an excuse to masturbate to feet. I wager a lot of female actors will out him as a feet rapist when he's an old bastard.MemphisRyder
This is easily Tarantino's most boring film ever. And for a director known for his exciting styles that push the limits of what cinematography can do, this so-called "tribute" to Hollywood is a pathetic attempt at nostalgia.Oh, and as a Chinese, go fuck yourself with that Bruce Lee scene.
Seriously though, there could have been so many ways to pay tribute to the glory of Golden Age Hollywood and the tragic circumstances that ultimately led to America becoming more cynical in the '70s. As a director known for loving cinema, there couldn't have been a better person to pay such a tribute, to really show how those washed out actors adapted to the changing times of cinema. What about having Cliff drop some subtle hints about his thoughts on Vietnam? Instead, we've got almost 3 hours of people driving around and moping about their dreary lives. Maybe save some of that Desperate Housewives drama for the telly, huh, 'tino?
Also, for those who said that only those who live in LA would understand and appreciate this film, good for you. I'm sure Reservoir Dogs could only be appreciated by the mafia, or Kill Bill could only be appreciated by betrayed ex-wives, or how Django Unchained could only be appreciated by black people.
Oh right, they're not.
