Some good dialogue, and Streep is great as ever, but disappointingly glosses over the brutal realities of colonial occupation; black African characters barely even get to speak, and the movie seems to expect us to admire Streep's quest to protect "my Gikuyu" instead of acknowledging her and her husband as the invaders and land thieves they are. (Even Dinesen's original book was much more interested in its Gikuyu characters than this movie.) Hopefully Hollywood will one day start making movies about Africa with African main characters instead of European transplants. Something like Gikuyu author Ngugi wa Thiong'o's A Grain of Wheat would be a great counterpoint to this one.
Sweeping old fashioned love story/drama. Great cast with a gorgeous score. A bit slow but after seeing it again for the first time in 25+ years still a great watch.
Very lovely visually - handsome Redford, beautiful Streep and wonderful cinematography - but I expected so much more from such a highly praised movie. It wasn't boring but it wasn't breathtaking either.
It got everything you want from a story based movie, and every scene always feels very thought out and fits perfectly with the one before and the one after. A movie about a life.
Meryl Streep does perhaps the best Actress in a Leading Role i've seen at least top 10.
We (Bangladesh) are one of victim of British colonization too. So many books written by them about their experience here like this “Out of Africa”… the whole things just irritate me.

Cinematography was the only thing worth seeing this movie for... Else long and boringEbbywebby
Well, this was the final Best Picture of the past 60 years that I hadn't seen yet. Not really worth the wait. Kind of a Harlequin romance plus lions. That hair-washing scene is pure porn for Robert Redford swooners.
