I really impressive piece of animation history. The scrolling backgrounds and foregrounds, coupled with (I assume) real life elements (the gold looks like real gold, not drawn gold) makes for a very impressive cartoon. Aside from being an impressive technical achievement, it's pretty entertaining in its own right.

The backgrounds in some of the shots are eerily realistic.

I never cared for Popeye cartoons even as a kid. They used to show these to us during recess on rainy days in grade school. I always hated when Popeye was shown. These cartoons just never had the same quality in my opinion as the Warner Brothers (Bugs Bunny, Porky Pig, Daffy Duck) films.

I'm a big Popeye fan. Especially the B&W tunes from the '30s made by the Fleisher studios. The color in this 2-reeler is awesome and there are plenty of sight gags too.
