Solid time travel flick with great performances, a tight script, acceptable logic, and tremendous noir-infused visuals. The only problem is that anyone who's familiar with time travel tropes will pick the twists from a mile away, but that still doesn't stop you from enjoying the ride. It's not all about the destination.
Good adaptation of 'All You Zombies', but I felt it worked best as a short story; it was quite faithful to the story, but it's much tighter and snappier when it's being read. Good performances and not too much dilly-dallying make for a solid film though.
Predestination, based on the possibly misleadingly-titled Robert Heinlein short story "All You Zombies", is the kind of film that would suffer if I said anything about it at all. There's almost nothing that wouldn't feel like a spoiler to me. So what CAN I say? I can say that it's an intricate time travel story. I can say, because it's right there in the title, that it's about predestination paradoxes. I can say that it has a twisted structure with stories told inside stories that's true to that concept, but that while I made a big case out of not spoiling any surprises, I've absorbed too many time travel stories in my life to not have been a step or two ahead of the film most of the way through. But there's a certain delight in figuring out the puzzle as it unfolds, so that wasn't a problem, especially given the performances of the small cast of actors (both Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook are excellent) and the film noir atmosphere. The twisted journey can be more important that the destination.
It was worth a rental but it wasn't hard to figure out who the two people were at the very beginning. When the final "twist" came, I really didn't get that we weren't supposed to have known what was secretly going on since the beginning.
There's no need to go back for a second viewing when you already saw everything the first time. I get the feeling a short film as part of an anthology would have worked better to speed things.
Despite the people saying this is not just about logic, still to me doesn't make me sense. Where's the baby comes from? it must have had a first time creating the loop, even cyclical time would initiate with a line.
Enjoyable though, I pulsed stop every ten minutes to think about the time travel's story
Clever but not amusing. Maybe it's just me, but I don't find far-fetched, convoluted stories entertaining. Maybe that means I just don't like the time travel genre.
