A terrific movie, great performance by hofman, and i also liked the soundtrack.
I was impressed. Rain Man is not nearly as saccharine as I thought it would be, contrary to my expectations, which were admittedly unfounded. Sort of a Christmas Carol-type story about a man learning to love, in some measure; his finding a path to some reconciliation with his late father. I suppose I don't want to spoil it, but I will say that I was very happy with the way the ending closed the story without being too cloying. The material is good, and thus we care. It can do without any obnoxious emotional climactic scene. That would be too easy for such a smart script.
The kiss scene puzzled me for a moment because I thought at first it was supposed to be some kind of wholesome/exploitative titillating moment. Now it seems to me that the scene was never supposed to be exploitative, and only serves to cement the idea that Raymond is to others what they project onto him. It could never have been romantic because Raymond can not and has no inclination to experience romance.
I hope that doesn't spoil anything. I thought I was vague enough. Roger Ebert spoils movies in his reviews, and I don't really see a difference between he and I.
