Delightfully charming and romantic. Peck is the quintessential gentleman and Hepburn beautiful and brilliant. Not much to say except it stirs the heart in the way only old fashioned cinema seems to do. I loved it!
There's an effortlessness in the chemistry between Peck and Hepburn that brings the day depicted in this film to life. Hepburn is remarkable in every way here. It's almost impossible to not enjoy yourself.
Without question, this movie ranks within my top 5 favorite movies of all time. I agree with several of the older comments, the chemistry and charm between Peck and Hepburn is unmatched. Trivia for the movie says that Peck's role was first offered to Cary Grant, and while he is excellent in most everything he is in, Gregory Peck was completely sublime in this role, and Audrey deserved her Oscar and all of the praise for her turn as the princess. While the ending is
so bittersweet...they fell in love but both recognize their duties and silently agree to leave it as is, simply the most perfect day
, it is also perfect and would not have been as satisfying any other way. Unlike other previous posters, I saw this movie years ago and only recently saw "It Happened One Night," and I think it is perfectly reasonable and acceptable to adore both movies. Both share a number of similarities
runaway rich girl and the reporter who wants to take advantage but falls in love and decides not to exploit her
and both have exceptionally strong leads, though I believe this movie has the edge in that it has a knockout third character, Rome. Not just the setting, it makes dreams come true, and Rome was the perfect backdrop for one of the most hilarious and romantic movies of all time. I love this movie, every single second of it.
Hepburn has played opposite a lot of leading men with good chemistry but this first outing for her seems to have set the gold standard. Both she and Peck are class personified and so they complete each other in a magical way. Incredible acting, fantastic screen chemistry, and gorgeous on-location filming. Hepburn acts like she's had decades of expertise under her belt, I mean how many other actresses could win an Oscar for their breakout role? It's a fairy tale come true.
The ending is one of the best moments in all of cinema. When Peck gazes at the empty part of the room we realize at the same time that she isn't coming back. Yet there still remains some last holdout of hope, that somehow the universe will smile down on him and that she'll reappear. His eyes silently plead, and hope, believing that just maybe protocol can be broken and love can win the day...
then the acceptance, but not without one last look back on what could have been.
Roman Holiday is a reverse Cinderella story, where a young princess runs away from her duties during a stay in Rome and spends the day with an American journalist, both of them lying about who they are, providing some nice comedy bits, though the film is essentially a doomed romance. A star-maker for Audrey Hepburn, Gregory Peck shouldn't be ignored. Both actors give nuanced performances and are not only charming, but go through a character arc. The climax is a great piece of film-making, played, like most of the film, without music that might tell you what to feel of what is happening in the characters' heads, playing things out in real time, lovingly resting on faces, just letting things happen. It's quite touching. More William Wyler in my diet may be indicated.
Quite similar to "It Happened One Night" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0025316/). That being a better movie, but this was in no way a bad film either (7/10)
"Introducing Audrey Hepburn"... and what an introduction it is! She is at the peak of her charm and elfin beauty here; utterly adorable throughout. The viewer can't help getting caught up in the childlike wonderment and joy of the Princess's holiday. Peck is in top form, as always, and the two make a deservedly iconic screen couple. It's a very rare film that can bring a genuine smile to my face and keep it there for its duration, not to mention warm the heart of a jaded misanthrope like myself. To quote the Princess, "So happy..."

Ohhh... Audrey Hepburn... I love you!ptrigueiro
Seing "It Happened One Night" before this one made me not like it as everybody. The idea is very much the same in both movies and Gable > Peck.Showing items 1 – 15 of 24
